Texas Court Rules No Damages In BP Plc Pollution Case-Reuters

Thursday, 10 Oct 2013 10:44pm EDT

Reuters reported that a Texas jury on October 10, 2013, ruled in favour of British energy giant BP Plc and did not award damages to plaintiffs in three lawsuits who claimed they were harmed by pollution from a BP-owned refinery in Texas City, Texas in 2010. The lawsuits were the first of 48,000 cases filed against BP Plc over the released of vapors into the atmosphere from a hydrocracking unit during a 40-day period in 2010. BP Plc has denied the claims that people were harmed by the emissions, which included 17,000 pounds of benzene. The plaintiffs were seeking compensation of $200,000 each. The plaintiffs' attorney said remaining lawsuits would go forward to trial in a state district court in Galveston, Texas. The Texas City refinery cases are being tried in Galveston by the Texas state court of the 56th Judicial District.
