Cabot Oil & Gas Corp - Pennsylvania families win $4.2 million damages in fracking lawsuit - Reuters News
Thursday, 10 Mar 2016 03:01pm EST

Cabot Oil & Gas Corp:A federal jury ruled on Thursday that Cabot Oil & Gas Co must pay more than $4.2 million in damages to two families in northeastern Pennsylvania who said the company's fracking operations contaminated their ground water - RTRS.Six jurors in federal court in Scranton awarded $1.3 million each to Scott Ely and Monica Marta-Ely, a married couple in Dimock. Each of their three children received an award of $50,000.A second couple, Ray and Victoria Hubert, also of Dimock, about 32 miles (50 km) south of Binghamton, New York, each received $720,000, and their daughter Hope was awarded $50,000.He said Cabot fought hard and "boxed them in," limiting the evidence his pro bono attorney, Leslie Lewis, could introduce, or what Ely could say in testimony.Cabot spokesman George Stark said the company was surprised by the verdict, and again asserted there was no evidence linking contamination of the Ely and Hubert wells to their fracking operations. The Elys and Huberts were the last of more than 40 families who had sued Cabot. They alleged that their water was contaminated with methane gas after the company began using the process of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, to extract gas from underground shale formations near Dimock in 2008. The other families settled with the company in 2012.  Full Article

Monday, 22 Feb 2016 03:38pm EST

Cabot Oil & Gas Corp:Jury selection began on Monday in a federal lawsuit in which two northeastern Pennsylvania families allege that Cabot Oil & Gas Corp contaminated their well water with methane when it began fracking for natural gas near their homes - RTRS.Two couples - Scott Ely and Monica Marta-Ely, and Ray and Victoria Hubert - are the only plaintiffs remaining in a case that initially involved more than 40 people. The rest have settled with Cabot, a major producer in Susquehanna County.Critics say fracking is responsible for environmental damage, excessive noise and even earthquakes. Its supporters say the process, which has slashed the country's dependence on foreign energy sources in recent years, is safe. The families suing Cabot live near Dimock, Pennsylvania, a town made infamous by “Gasland,” an Oscar-nominated documentary that galvanized the anti-fracking movement. The 2010 film showed tap water in the area that could be set on fire because of the methane gas it contained. Both families say water in their homes was flammable in the past.Scott Ely, who said his family has lived in the Dimock area since the 1800s, said he hauls in tankers of water for his family. The family showed reporters a bottle of water that they say came from their well. It was the color of coffee and cream. The two families are seeking compensatory and punitive damages from Cabot for the alleged contamination of their water supply.  Full Article
