U.S. says CSX Corp missed rail defect blamed for oil train derailment - Reuters

CSX Corp:A fiery oil train derailment that forced the evacuation of hundreds of people in West Virginia last February was caused by a rail defect that railroad inspectors from CSX Corp missed twice in the preceding months, U.S. regulators said on Friday - Reuters.Twenty-seven of the train's 109 cars derailed near Mount Carbon, West Virginia, on Feb. 16 - Reuters.At least nine cars caught fire and burned for days, strengthening support for tougher oil train safety standards for trains carrying U.S. crude from North Dakota's Bakken region. Tighter federal regulations were published in May - Reuters.The Federal Railroad Administration fined CSX and its contractor, Sperry Rail Service, $25,000 each for failure to properly verify a potential rail defect. An FRA spokesman said the sum is the maximum allowed under federal law for such a violation - Reuters.FRA also called for more detailed inspections across the industry and stronger training for inspection vehicle operator. It also said it would explore the need for new rail standards and slower train speeds under certain conditions - Reuters.The U.S. railroad regulatory agency said a verticle split rail head defect caused the rail to break as the CSX train passed. CSX Corp:Says A freight train carrying flammable and toxic gas derailed and caught fire in Blount County, Tennessee, prompting the evacuation of more than 5,000 people, fire officials and rail company CSX Corp CSX.N said - Reuters.Says Seven emergency workers were hospitalized after being exposed to chemical-laden fumes from the blaze, local officials said.Says Specialists advised firefighters to let the fire burn itself out because attempts to extinguish it could be hazardous, Blount County firefighter Kermit Easterling said.Says Residents within a two-mile radius were evacuated, according to the Federal Railroad Administration.Says the derailed car carried acrylonitrile, a product used in the manufacture of plastics, company spokeswoman Kristin Seay said in an email.Says the CSX train which was traveling from Cincinnati, Ohio to Waycross, Georgia, has two locomotives, 45 loaded rail cars carrying mixed freight, and 12 empty rail cars.  Full Article
