Glencore PLC:Diversified mining group African Rainbow Minerals (ARM) said on Friday its first-half profit halved due to sharply softer commodity prices, prompting layoffs and costs cuts to stay afloat - RTRS.Headline earnings per share, a measure that strips off certain one off items, in the six months to December reached 233 cents from 473 cents a year earlier.ARM, which has interests in platinum, iron ore, coal, copper, and gold saw lower prices in all of its commodities except for chrome."ARM has responded proactively to the commodity price downturn and has implemented operating and capital cost reduction initiatives at all its operations," the company said in a statement.The company operates joint ventures with Anglo American Platinum, Assore, Impala Platinum, Glencore and Vale.ARM cut planned spending for the first half of 2016 by 15 percent to 1.4 billion rand ($92 million) mainly from curtailments in the ferrous metals Black Rock Project, which is its most capital intensive venture.The company said it would cut jobs at its platinum mines Modikwa and Nkomati, Beeshoek iron ore mine and Khumani chrome mines but did not say how many positions were on the line.  Full Article

Glencore PLC:Two workers at Glencore's huge Katanga Mining copper and cobalt operation in southeastern Democratic Republic of Congo died on Tuesday and five remain missing, the mine's chairman said after a 250-metre pit wall collapsed. - RTRS."Of the seven who disappeared, two bodies were found," Gustave Nzeng, chairman of Kamoto Copper Company (KCC), the joint venture that runs the mine, told reporters in the town of Kolwezi.Rescue efforts to find the remaining workers were being hindered by heavy rain, Nzeng said. Mining companies in Congo extracted just under 1 million tonnes of copper in 2015, making the country Africa's top producer.The Katanga Mining joint venture is controlled by Glencore, the Swiss-based mining and trading company, while Congo's state mining company Gecamines and Israeli billionaire Dan Gertler's Fleurette Group both hold minority stakes.The project is one of the country's largest and consists of both underground and open-air mines formerly owned by Gecamines. It started commercial production in 2008.Katanga Mining announced an 18-month suspension of production last September, but work on maintenance and an $880 million modernisation project to cut costs has continued.  Full Article

Glencore PLC:Union workers at Cerrejon, Colombia's largest coal mine, have voted in favor of a strike, the union said on Thursday, amid a dispute with the company over wages and benefits. - RTRS.The Sintracarbon union has 10 days to declare the start date for the strike, leader Jairo Quiroz said.Cerrejon is a joint venture between BHP Billiton, Anglo American Plc and Glencore Xstrata. It has been producing coal in Colombia since the mid-1980s under a concession that runs until 2033.  Full Article
