Groupe Eurotunnel SA Releases Statement Following the Competition Commission's Findings on Maritime Activity MyFerryLink
Groupe Eurotunnel SA announced that the Competition Commission has stated in its provisional findings that Groupe Eurotunnel's new maritime proposition could lead to a reduction in competition across the Channel and has provisionally concluded that it will be necessary that MyFerryLink is withdrawn from the market. The Company contests this analysis and has sent its own observations to the Competition Commission. Amongst other things, the Company stated that the acquisition was approved by the French Competition Authorities with certain restrictions, in particular the requirement not to market a bundle of Tunnel/Ferry options. In addition, the Company considers the maritime activities of MyFerryLink to be complementary to those of Le Shuttle, particularly with regard to traffic which cannot be transported through the Tunnel, and to offer an alternative to its customers in the event of its own infrastructure being unavailable. The Company also stated that it does not envisage the activity putting the two incumbent operators at risk, and that in contrast to the Competition Commission, it considers that it has increased competition in the ferry market. Groupe Eurotunnel SA to Challenge Competition Commission's Provisional Findings
Groupe Eurotunnel SA announced on February 19, 2013 its provisional findings in relation to the acquisition by GET SA of assets previously owned by SeaFrance and the creation of a new competitor in the cross-Channel market, MyFerryLink. Eurotunnel is not surprised at the position of the Competition Commission, but will challenge the provisional findings which conclude that the addition of the new operator, MyFerryLink, would be detrimental to competition and could lead to an increase in prices. Eurotunnel contends that, since the favorable opinion given by the French Competition Authorities in 2012, it would appear the existing ferry operators in the Short Straits market have sought to use the process initiated by the British Competition Authorities to protect their own interests from new entrants and increased competition. Eurotunnel considers that the acquisition of the ex SeaFrance ships, nine months after that company ceased all operations, and the creation of a new competitor in the cross-Channel marketplace, MyFerryLink, constitutes an increase in competition and brings additional choice for customers. Groupe Eurotunnel SA and Alstom SA Organize Prima II Locomotive Tests Inside the Channel Tunnel
Groupe Eurotunnel SA (Eurotunnel) announced that having obtained, in July 2012, that the Technical Specifications for interoperability should be applicable to freight trains travelling through the Channel Tunnel, tests on the new generation Alstom SA's Prima II locomotives were conducted overnight between 29 and 30 September, 2012 in order to check compatibility with Channel Tunnel systems and safety standards. For this first test, a Prima II locomotive, in standard configuration and hauling wagons with a total weight of 950 tons, entered the Tunnel via the French portal at 22:20 before conducting a series of traction, brake and pantograph tests. Exiting the Tunnel at Folkestone at approximately 03:00, the train then departed for a second series of tests on the return journey to France, ending at approximately 06:00. The tests are in line with Eurotunnel’s ambition to enable the development of standard rail freight services between the UK and continental Europe, that is to say, without the obligation to use the specialized Class 92 locomotives.
