Microsoft Corp Announces Debt Offerings

Microsoft Corp announced the pricing of its offerings of EUR550 million of senior unsecured notes and $1.950 billion of senior unsecured notes. The notes consist of the following tranches: EUR550 million of 2.625% notes due May 2, 2033; $450 million of 1.000% notes due May 1, 2018; $1 billion of 2.375% notes due May 1, 2023; $500 million of 3.750% notes due May 1, 2043. Microsoft intends to use the net proceeds from the offerings for general corporate purposes, which may include, among other things, funding for working capital, capital expenditures, repurchases of capital stock, acquisitions and repayment of existing debt. The offerings are expected to close on May 2, 2013.  Full Article

VirnetX Holding Corp Files New Lawsuit Against Microsoft Corp Citing Willful Infringement

VirnetX Holding Corp announced that on April 22, 2013, it filed a complaint against Microsoft Corp in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Tyler Division. The complaint includes allegations of willful patent infringement regarding six patents owned by VirnetX, U.S. Patent Nos. 6,502,135, 7,188,180, 7,418,504, 7,490,151, 7,921,211, and 7,987,274. Specifically, the complaint references Microsoft's Skype products as infringing the VirnetX patents. Skype was purchased after the limited license was signed between Microsoft and VirnetX. This infringement falls outside of the scope of the prior license. In its complaint, VirnetX seeks both damages and injunctive relief.  Full Article

Microsoft Corp announced in its Form 8K that Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Peter Klein will leave the Company at the end of the current fiscal year, after nearly four years in role and 11 years at the Company. Microsoft Corp and Foxconn Parent Hon Hai Sign Patent Agreement For Android and Chrome Devices

Microsoft Corp and Hon Hai, the parent company of Foxconn, signed a worldwide patent licensing agreement that provides broad coverage under Microsoft's patent portfolio for devices running the Android and Chrome OS, including smartphones, tablets and televisions. While the contents of the agreement are confidential, the parties indicate that Microsoft will receive royalties from Hon Hai under the agreement. Hon Hai joins a growing list of contract manufacturing and original design manufacturing companies with Android and Chrome patent licenses.  Full Article

Cisco Systems Inc, International Business Machines Corp, Microsoft Corp And Others Team Up On New Technology Project-Reuters

Reuters reported that Cisco Systems Inc, International Business Machines Corp (IBM) and Citrix Systems Inc have joined forces with other tech companies in a consortium to kickstart the corporate market for software-defined networking (SDN), aimed at making network management easier and cheaper. Other members of the development platform called OpenDaylight include Juniper Networks, Inc., VMware Inc, Microsoft Corp, Red Hat, Inc., Intel Corp and Brocade Communications Systems Inc as well as privately held Big Switch Networks and Arista Networks. Each member will contribute technology such as code to the project in an effort to share the costs of basic research and development, and enable products from different vendors to work together. Vendors will still be able to customize their offerings to differentiate themselves from rivals. The SDN market is still considered nascent, but is expected to grow to $3.7 billion by 2016 from an estimated $360 million this year, according to research firm IDC. The first code from OpenDaylight is expected to be released in the third quarter of this year.  Full Article

Ericsson To Acquire Microsoft Corp's Mediaroom Business

Ericsson announced that it has reached an agreement with Microsoft Corp to acquire TV solution Mediaroom business. Closing expected during the second half of 2013. Mediaroom is situated in Mountain View, California and employs more than 400 people worldwide. Mediaroom will be incorporated into Business Unit Support Solutions. Linux Users File EU Complaint Against Microsoft Corp-Reuters

Reuters reported that a Spanish association representing open-source software users has filed a complaint against Microsoft Corp to the European Commission, in a new challenge to the Windows developer following a hefty fine earlier this month. The 8,000-member Hispalinux, which represents users and developers of the Linux operating system in Spain, said Microsoft had made it difficult for users of computers sold with its Windows 8 platform to switch to Linux and other operating systems. Lawyer and Hispalinux head Jose Maria Lancho said he delivered the complaint to the Madrid office of the European Commission. In its 14-page complaint, Hispalinux said Windows 8 contained an 'obstruction mechanism' called UEFI Secure Boot that controls the start-up of the computer and means users must seek keys from Microsoft to install another operating system.  Full Article

ITC says Microsoft did not violate Google patent

WASHINGTON - Microsoft Corp won a round in a complex patent war on Thursday when the International Trade Commission said the company's popular Xbox entertainment system did not violate a patent owned by Google subsidiary Motorola Mobility.
