Thursday, 17 Jan 2013 06:30am EST

Dow Jones reported that the Swedish government confirmed on January 17, 2013 media reports that it has given the Swedish Armed Forces permission to buy 60 of Saab AB's new JAS 39 Gripen jet fighters following a debate about the country's ability to defend itself. The first planes are to be delivered during 2018 and all the jets are expected to be operational by 2027. In December 2012, parliament approved the Swedish government ordering 40-60 of the new Gripen jets. The cost of the new planes hasn't been disclosed, but Swedish radio reported they will cost SEK 90 billion (USD 13.89 billion) in total.
