Florida PSC reduces power utility natgas hedging by up to 25 pct
Tuesday, 14 Jun 2016 11:36am EDT

Florida energy regulators changed the amount of natural gas the state's investor-owned power companies can hedge after consumers paid billions more for fuel over the past several years. : The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) last week approved modifications to the risk management plans – or hedging practices – for NextEra Energy Inc's Florida Power & Light Co, Southern Co's Gulf Power Co, and TECO Energy Inc's Tampa Electric Co. . From 2002 through the end of 2016, the state's four investor-owned power companies were expected to have lost more than $6.6 billion because they bought hedged gas at higher prices, according to local media reports. . The PSC said it left Duke Energy Corp's plan for its Duke Energy Florida utility in place because it "has the flexibility to meet the revised targets." . To reduce fuel hedging costs during downward price trends, the PSC approved the utilities proposals to reduce annual fuel purchases targeted for hedges by up to 25 percent and shorten their respective time horizons for placing hedges.
