Telefonica SA:European Union has sent CK Hutchison Holdings a statement setting out its objections over the company's planned $14 bln takeover of Telefonica SA's O2, according to people familiar with the matter, on concerns the deal could lead to higher prices and less choice for U.K. consumers - DJ.European Commission, the bloc's top antitrust regulator, has said the sale of O2 to Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing's conglomerate Hutchison would create the largest mobile-network operator in the U.K., potentially removing an important competitor. - DJ.Commission opened a full-blown investigation into the telecoms deal in Oct - DJ.O2 is Britain's 2nd-largest mobile operator, and Hutchison already owns the 4th largest operator, 3 U.K. - DJ.In a statement, Hutchison's managing director Canning Fok on Thursday defended the deal, saying it would be willing to sell fractional ownership stakes in its U.K. mobile network to competitors - DJ.Mr. Fok also said the consolidation of the two companies would lead to a five-year price freeze for consumers and that the merged entity would invest GBP5 bln in the business during that time. Telefonica SA:NBCUniversal, Disney and 4 other U.S. studios together with Sky UK on Monday rebuffed EU charges of anti-competitive movie-licensing deals in a crucial hearing ahead of a decision later this year - RTRS.The companies' defence at a 3-day closed-door hearing came six months after the European Commission accused them of preventing consumers outside Britain and Ireland from accessing films and other content broadcast by the British pay-TV group - RTRS.Clauses in the deals also prevent other broadcasters from making their pay-TV services available in the UK and Ireland - RTRS.The accusations by the EU antitrust enforcer came amid a campaign to end restrictions hindering cross-border trade, aimed at boosting e-commerce and growth in the 28-country bloc - RTRS.Defenders of territorial licensing, however, say that the system preserves the region's cultural diversity and safeguards fair payment for artists and content providers - RTRS.Other Hollywood studios involved in the case are Paramount Pictures, part of Viacom, Sony, Twentieth Century Fox and Warner Brothers - RTRS.Sky UK and the studios face fines up to 10% of their global turnover if found guilty of breaching EU rules - RTRS.Other participants included Canal Plus, German media ProSieben, Telefonica's DTS unit, the European Producers Club, British Film Institute, Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television, French cinema producers body APC and Italy's cinema and audiovisual group Anica - RTRS.  Full Article

Telefonica SA says may halt Spanish fibre optic investment - Reuters

Telefonica SA:Telefonica said on Wednesday it was considering halting investments in its Spanish fibre optic operations after the country's antitrust watchdog recommended it should share the network in some areas - RTRS.The watchdog, known as the CNMC, said in a statement earlier on Wednesday in towns and cities where fewer than three companies were offering the super fast internet, the main operator should share access to its network with rivals - RTRS.It identified 34 towns and cities where this was not the case - RTRS.Telefonica said it was reviewing plans to roll out the fibre optic network as it studied the watchdog's proposal - RTRS.  Full Article

Telefonica SA:Spain's anti-trust watchdog CNMC said on Thursday it had fined Telefonica 5 million euros ($5.7 million) for failing to comply with regulation on renting broadband connections to its competitors for more than four years - Reuters.The CNMC said Telefonica had applied charges and clauses in the rental of ethernet circuits above those established by the regulators - Reuters.Telefonica, with cable networks throughout the country, is obliged to share the grid with competitors at regulated rates and under terms set by the CNMC - Reuters.  Full Article

Telefonica SA:Britain's competition authority has asked EU antitrust regulators to let it examine Hutchison Whampoa's 0001.HK 10.25-billion-pound ($15.6 billion) bid for Telefonica's British mobile unit O2 because the deal would impact the UK most - Reuters.The European Commission has been reviewing the deal, which will reduce the number of mobile operators from four to three, since Sept. 11. That threshold has triggered regulatory alarm bells in past mergers in Denmark, Germany, Austria and Ireland - Reuters.The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said it was better placed than the EU enforcer to scrutinise Hutchison's bid to create the biggest mobile operator in Britain by merging its Three UK unit with O2 - Reuters."It is appropriate for the case to be referred to the CMA for investigation because any impact on competition resulting from the merger will likely be limited to UK consumers," the UK agency said on its website - Reuters.Commission spokesman Ricardo Cardoso confirmed the CMA's request, saying the Commission will assess it.
