Thomson Reuters Corp And EU Settle Data Antitrust Row-DJ
Thursday, 20 Dec 2012 06:07am EST

Dow Jones reported that Thomson Reuters Corp has settled long-running concerns that it is abusing its dominant market position in the real-time market data sector with the European Union. The European Commission said Thomson Reuters had agreed to allow customers to use Reuters Instruments Codes for data sourced from its competitors for a monthly fee--the codes identify securities used by financial institutions to retrieve data from its real-time data feeds. The probe was opened in late 2009 by EU regulators to ensure that traders and other users can get access to financial data at reasonable prices and have the possibility to switch to competing services. The news and business data provider has repeatedly revised its commitments to address concerns. The commission had concerns because Thomson Reuters was prohibiting customers to use RICs for retrieving data from alternative data providers.  Full Article

EU To Accept Thomson Reuters Corp Concessions, End Probe-Reuters
Monday, 10 Dec 2012 01:26pm EST

Reuters reported that EU antitrust regulators plan to accept revised proposals from Thomson Reuters Corp to end an investigation into whether its control over its financial instrument codes was anticompetitive. The decision meant the news and information company would not be penalised and that the investigation would be dropped. The Commission had expressed concern that Thomson Reuters may have abused its dominant position in financial data by preventing customers from using its codes to get data from rivals and cross-reference them. The case is part of an effort by EU regulators to ensure that traders and other users can get access to financial data at reasonable rates and be able to switch to competing services. The coding case was opened in October 2009 and the company has offered various concessions since, with the latest round proposed in May. It is these concessions - including lower licence fees for using the codes - that would now be accepted.  Full Article
