May 22 (Reuters) - Department store operator Stage Stores Inc reported lower first-quarter earnings as a weak economy and retail environment weighed, but forecast second-quarter profit above market expectations. The retailer posted quarterly earnings of $2.3 million, or 6 cents a share, compared with $9.1 million, or 20 cents a share, a year earlier. The year-ago quarter included a non-comparable gain of 4 cents per share.
