Although a steep decline in sales volumes and price levels hit year-on-year earnings, the group beat all estimates in a Reuters analyst poll as demand picked up even in developed economies in Europe and the United States.

"We have applied for it and are in talks at the moment," a Voestalpine spokesman said. He would not disclose the amount the company is seeking but said the criteria were "strict".
