Biographies

Name Description

Michael Bonney

Mr. Michael W. Bonney is Independent Chairman of the Board of the Company. Mr. Bonney was a Partner at Third Rock Ventures, a healthcare venture firm, from January to July 2016. Mr. Bonney previously served as the Chief Executive Officer and a member of the board of directors of Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company (now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Merck & Co., Inc.), from June 2003 until his retirement in December 2014. From January 2002 to June 2003, he served as Cubist’s President and Chief Operating Officer. Mr. Bonney is also a trustee of the Tekla complex of life sciences and healthcare dedicated funds, publicly traded investment funds. In addition, Mr. Bonney serves as a director of Celgene Corporation and Global Blood Therapeutics, Inc., and formerly served as a director of NPS Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Cubist.

Barry Greene

Mr. Barry E. Greene serves as President of the Company. He has served as our President since December 2007, as our Chief Operating Officer from the time he joined us in October 2003 through September 2016, and from February 2004 through December 2005, as our Treasurer. From February 2001 to September 2003, Mr. Greene served as General Manager of Oncology at Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company (now Millennium: The Takeda Oncology Company). Mr. Greene serves as a member of the board of directors of Acorda Therapeutics, Inc., a biotechnology company and as the lead director of Karyopharm Therapeutics Inc., a clinical-stage pharmaceutical company.

John Maraganore

Dr. John M. Maraganore, Ph.D., is Chief Executive Officer, Director of the Company. Dr. Maraganore also served as our President from December 2002 to December 2007. From April 2000 to December 2002, Dr. Maraganore served as Senior Vice President, Strategic Product Development at Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company (now Millennium: The Takeda Oncology Company). Dr. Maraganore serves as the chairman of the board of directors of Agios Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biotechnology company and as a member of the board of directors of bluebird bio, Inc., a biotechnology company.

Manmeet Soni

Mr. Manmeet S. Soni has been appointed as Chief Financial Officer, Senior Vice President, Principal Financial Officer of the Company. Prior to joining the Company, Mr. Soni, most recently served as the Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer of ARIAD Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company, from March 2016 until February 2017, when ARIAD was acquired by Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited. Mr. Soni continued as an employee of ARIAD through May 2017. Previously, he served as Chief Financial Officer of Pharmacyclics, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company, until its acquisition by AbbVie, Inc. in May 2015, after which he supported AbbVie during the post-acquisition transition through September 2015. He first joined Pharmacyclics in September 2012 as corporate controller and served in various roles prior to being appointed as Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer in February 2014. Mr. Soni worked at ZELTIQ Aesthetics Inc., a publicly held medical technology company, from January 2012 to September 2012, where he served as Controller and Senior Director of Finance. Prior to ZELTIQ, Mr. Soni worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers in San Jose, CA from June 2007 to January 2012 in the Life Science and Venture Capital Group. Prior to that, he worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers India providing audit and assurance services. Mr. Soni graduated from Hansraj College at Delhi University in India. He is a Certified Public Accountant and completed his Chartered Accountancy from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.

Yvonne Greenstreet

Dr. Yvonne Greenstreet, MBChB, MBA, serves as Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer of the Company. Prior to joining Alnylam, Dr. Greenstreet most recently served as the founder and Managing Director of Highgate LLC, from January 2014 to August 2016. Prior to that time, Dr. Greenstreet served as the Senior Vice President and Head of Medicines Development at Pfizer Inc., a multinational pharmaceutical company, from December 2010 to November 2013. Prior to joining Pfizer, Dr. Greenstreet worked for 18 years at GlaxoSmithKline plc, or GSK, a multinational pharmaceutical, biologics, vaccines and consumer healthcare company, where she served in various positions, most recently as Senior Vice President and Chief of Strategy for Research and Development and as a member of GSK’s Product Management Board. Dr. Greenstreet serves as a member of the board of directors of Pacira Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a specialty pharmaceutical company, Indivior PLC, a global specialty pharmaceutical business, and Advanced Accelerator Applications S.A., a radiopharmaceutical company. Dr. Greenstreet also serves on the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Akshay Vaishnaw

Dr. Akshay K. Vaishnaw, M.D., Ph.D., serves as Executive Vice President - Research and Development of the Company. He served as our Executive Vice President from June 2012 to December 2014 and prior to that as our Senior Vice President from June 2011 to June 2012. He served as our Senior Vice President, Clinical Research from December 2008 to June 2011, and prior to that served as our Vice President, Clinical Research from the time he joined us in January 2006. From December 1998 through December 2005, Dr. Vaishnaw held various positions at Biogen Inc., a biopharmaceutical company. Dr. Vaishnaw serves as a member of the board of directors of Editas Medicine, Inc., a biotechnology company. Dr. Vaishnaw is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians, United Kingdom.

Laurie Keating

Ms. Laurie B. Keating is Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of the company. Prior to joining Alnylam, Ms. Keating served as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Millennium: The Takeda Oncology Company, a biopharmaceutical company, from September 2004 to January 2014. Prior to Millennium, Ms. Keating was co-founder and the first chief executive officer of Hydra Biosciences, Inc. Before co-founding Hydra, she served as an executive at several high growth technology companies. Upon graduating from law school, Ms. Keating practiced law at McCutchen, Doyle, Brown and Enersen (which became Bingham McCutchen and is now a part of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius).

Pushkal Garg

Dr. Pushkal Garg, M.D., serves as Senior Vice President - Clinical Development, Chief Medical Officer of the Company. Dr. Garg joined Alnylam in late 2014 with over 15 years of experience in early and late-stage clinical drug development, including at Bristol-Myers Squibb and Millennium Pharmaceuticals. During his tenure at BMS, he was responsible for the development and successful global approvals of several medicines in the Immunoscience therapeutic area. He received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley, and an M.D. from the University of California, San Francisco. He completed residency training in Internal Medicine at UCSF, was a research fellow at Johns Hopkins University, and served on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and the Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston prior to joining industry.

Theresa Heggie

Ms. Theresa Heggie has been appointed as Senior Vice President, Head of Europe and Canada of the Company. In this role Ms. Heggie will be responsible for the strategic direction and activity of all of Alnylam’s operations in Europe and Canada including building the go-to-market strategy across multiple products and therapeutic areas. Most recently she served as the Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer at The British United Provident Association (Bupa). Previously, Ms. Heggie held various senior commercial positions at Shire Human Genetic Therapies (and formerly TKT) including the roles of Vice President and General Manager of EMEA, Chief Executive Officer of Jerini AG (a Shire acquisition), and Senior Vice President of Global Commercial Operations. Earlier, at Baxter Healthcare she held numerous roles including Vice President of Global Marketing. Early in her career, Ms. Heggie held a variety of sales and marketing positions at Janssen Pharmaceuticals. She formerly served as a member of the board of directors of Swedish Orphan Biovitrum AB. Theresa received a BSc from Cornell University.

Peter Smith

Dr. Peter F. Smith, Ph.D., has been appointed as Senior Vice President - Early Development of the Company. In this role, Dr. Smith will be responsible for all aspects of non-clinical safety, drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics, bioanalysis and biomarker programs, providing both scientific and drug development leadership. Dr. Smith brings more than 30 years of pharma industry experience to Alnylam, most recently joining from Moderna, where he was Head of R&D Non-Clinical. He joined Moderna from Millennium Pharmaceuticals, where he most recently served as co-head of R&D and a member of the company’s management team. In this role, he was responsible for management of all Non-Clinical groups and Pharmaceutical Sciences. His extensive experience in drug discovery and development spans multiple therapeutic areas and therapeutic modalities. Over the course of Dr. Smith’s career, he has had oversight of the non-clinical development of multiple, currently marketed therapeutics including CELEBREX®, INSPRA®, VELCADE® and ENTYVIO®, and also deep involvement in the development of numerous other products. Dr. Smith has a B.S. in biology from Fairfield University and a Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Toxicology from the University of Arizona. His postdoctoral fellowship in biochemical toxicology was undertaken at SmithKline. He has published and presented extensively in the pharm/tox area as well as in the area of drug development.

Michael Mason

Mr. Michael P. Mason has been appointed as Principal Accounting Officer, Vice President - Finance, Treasurer of the Company., effective May 9, 2017. From December 2005 to February 2011, Mr. Mason served as our Corporate Controller, and from August 2009 to February 2011, as our Senior Director of Finance. From June 2006 to July 2009, Mr. Mason served as our Director of Finance. From May 2000 through November 2005, Mr. Mason served in several finance and commercial roles at Praecis Pharmaceuticals Incorporated, a public biotechnology company, most recently as Corporate Controller. Prior to Praecis, Mr. Mason worked in the audit practice at KPMG LLP, a national audit, tax and advisory services firm. Mr. Mason has an MBA and is a certified public accountant.

Alan Eisenberg

Mr. Alan Eisenberg has been appointed as Vice President - Global Public Policy and Government Relations of the Company. In this role, Alan will lead federal, state and local government affairs and public policy initiatives globally. Alan joins Alnylam from Celgene where he was the Vice President for Federal Government Relations. In this role, he led Celgene’s Federal Government Relations function and had direct responsibility for the Company’s public policy engagement with Congress, relevant Executive Branch agencies and other Washington, D.C. based stakeholders. Prior to Celgene, Mr. Eisenberg was Executive Vice President for Emerging Companies & Business Development at the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO), leading BIO’s services and advocacy efforts for BIO’s pre-market and early stage commercial companies, in addition to serving in other senior leadership roles at BIO. Previously, Mr. Eisenberg served as Health and Economics Policy Advisor to Congressman Jim Greenwood and prior to that, he served on the staff of the Senate HELP Public Health Subcommittee, and also was a legislative assistant for Congressman John Shadegg. Earlier in his career he spent four years with Ford Motor Company. Mr. Eisenberg holds a Master in Public Policy degree from Harvard University, a Master of Science in Finance degree from George Washington University, and a Bachelor of Science degree from Union College.

Dennis Ausiello

Dr. Dennis A. Ausiello, M.D., is Independent Director of the company. Dr. Ausiello serves as the Director of the Center for Assessment Technology and Continuous Health (CATCH), Jackson Distinguished Professor of Clinical Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Physician-in-Chief Emeritus at Massachusetts General Hospital, and served as the Chief of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1996 to April 2013. Dr. Ausiello was the President of the Association of American Physicians in 2006. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Ausiello also serves as a director of Pfizer Inc. and Seres Therapeutics, Inc.

John Clarke

Mr. John K. Clarke is Independent Director of the Company. Mr. Clarke is a founder of Alnylam, has served as a member of our board of directors since June 2002 and served as the chair of our board until December 2015. Since founding Cardinal Partners, a venture capital firm focused on healthcare, in 1997, Mr. Clarke has served as its Managing General Partner. Mr. Clarke also serves as the chair of the board of directors of aTyr Pharma, Inc., and formerly served as a director of Momenta Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Verastem, Inc.

Marsha Fanucci

Ms. Marsha H. Fanucci is Independent Director of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Ms. Fanucci served as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company (now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited), from July 2004 to January 2009. While at Millennium, she also served as Vice President, Finance and Corporate Strategy from July 2003 to June 2004, and prior to that as Vice President of Corporate Development from 2000. Prior to joining Millennium, Ms. Fanucci served as Vice President of Corporate Development and Strategy at Genzyme Corporation, a biotechnology company (now Sanofi Genzyme, the specialty care global business unit of Sanofi), from 1998 to 2000. Ms. Fanucci also serves as a director of Ironwood Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Syros Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and formerly served as a director of Momenta Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Steven Paul

Dr. Steven M. Paul, M.D., is Independent Director of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Dr. Paul has served as the President, Chief Executive Officer and a director of Voyager Therapeutics, Inc., a biotechnology company, since September 2014. Dr. Paul was the founding director of the Appel Alzheimer’s Disease Research Institute, and is a Professor of Neurology (Neuroscience), Psychiatry and Pharmacology at Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University, and a Venture Partner at Third Rock Ventures, a healthcare venture firm. Dr. Paul served for 17 years at Eli Lilly and Company, a pharmaceutical company, most recently as the Executive Vice President for Science and Technology and President of the Lilly Research Laboratories, a division of Eli Lilly and Company, from July 2003 to his retirement in February 2010. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Prior to joining Lilly, Dr. Paul served in several senior roles at the National Institute of Mental Health, including serving as the Scientific Director of the Intramural Research Program. Dr. Paul also serves as a director of Voyager Therapeutics, Inc. and SAGE Therapeutics, Inc., and formerly served as a director of the Sigma-Aldrich Corporation (which was acquired by Merck KGaA).

David Pyott

Mr. David E.I. Pyott is Independent Director of the Company. Mr. Pyott served as the Chief Executive Officer of Allergan, Inc., a global specialty pharmaceutical and medical device company, from January 1998 to March 2015 and as the Chair of Allergan’s board of directors from March 2001 until March 2015. Prior to Allergan, Mr. Pyott served as the Head of the Novartis Nutrition Division and as a member of the Executive Committee of Switzerland-based Novartis AG. Mr. Pyott also serves as the lead independent director at Avery Dennison Corporation, a director of BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. and a member of the Supervisory Board of Royal Philips in the Netherlands. Mr. Pyott formerly served as a director of Edwards Lifesciences Corporation.

Paul Schimmel

Dr. Paul R. Schimmel Ph.D., is Independent Director of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Dr. Schimmel is a scientific founder of Alnylam and has served as a member of our board of directors since June 2002. As required by our Corporate Governance Guidelines, Dr. Schimmel offered his resignation to the board of directors upon reaching the age of 75. After considering Dr. Schimmel’s many contributions to the board of directors and his specialized experience in areas critical to our company, our board of directors determined not to accept Dr. Schimmel’s resignation and is recommending Dr. Schimmel for re-election as a director. Dr. Schimmel has been the Ernest and Jean Hahn Professor of Molecular Biology and Chemistry and a member of the faculty of the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at the Scripps Research Institute since 1997. Previously, he was the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Schimmel is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine, the National Academy of Inventors and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Schimmel also serves as a director of aTyr Pharma, Inc.

Amy Schulman

Ms. Amy W. Schulman is Independent Director of the Company. Ms. Schulman joined Polaris Partners, a venture capital firm, as a Venture Partner in August 2014. In July 2015, Ms. Schulman co-founded Lyndra, Inc., where she serves as the Chief Executive Officer and a director. Since July 2014, Ms. Schulman has also been a senior lecturer at Harvard Business School. Ms. Schulman served as Chief Executive Officer of Arsia Therapeutics, Inc. from August 2014 to November 2016, when Arsia was acquired by Eagle Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Ms. Schulman was previously the Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Pfizer Inc., a global pharmaceutical company, from May 2008 to July 2014, where she also served as the Business Unit Lead for Pfizer’s Consumer Healthcare business from 2012 to 2013. Before joining Pfizer, she was a partner at DLA Piper. Ms. Schulman also serves as a director of Blue Buffalo Pet Products, Inc. and Ironwood Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and formerly served as a director of BIND Therapeutics, Inc.

Phillip Sharp

Dr. Phillip A. Sharp Ph.D. is Independent Director of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Dr. Sharp is an Institute Professor at the David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and was the Founding Director of the McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT. Dr. Sharp has been a professor at MIT since 1974. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Sharp also serves as a director of Syros Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and formerly served as a director of Biogen Inc., which he co-founded in 1978. Dr. Sharp, a leading researcher in molecular biology and biochemistry, brings to our board a fundamental understanding of the core scientific principles of our business. Dr. Sharp received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1993, received numerous awards and honorary degrees for his scientific work, and served on many advisory boards for the government, academic institutions, scientific societies and companies. Dr. Sharp also has strategic expertise based upon his role as a co-founder and former director of Biogen. As one of our scientific founders, Dr. Sharp’s insight and scientific expertise are invaluable assets to our board when evaluating our strategy and unique challenges as one of the first companies focused on the discovery and development of RNAi therapeutics, and he is uniquely qualified to serve as the chair of our science and technology committee.

Kevin Starr

Mr. Kevin P. Starr is Independent Director of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Since April 2007, Mr. Starr has been a Partner of Third Rock Ventures, a healthcare venture firm. From January 2003 to March 2007, Mr. Starr was an entrepreneur. From December 2001 to December 2002, Mr. Starr served as Chief Operating Officer of Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company (now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited). He also served as Millennium’s Chief Financial Officer from December 1998 to December 2002. Mr. Starr also serves as a director of SAGE Therapeutics, Inc. and MyoKardia Inc., and formerly served as a director of Agios Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Global Blood Therapeutics, Inc. and Zafgen, Inc.
