Kenneth Kelley |
Mr. Kenneth J. Kelley, Ph.D., is Independent Chairman of the Board of Directors of Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc. Mr. Kelley brings 30 years of entrepreneurial, venture capital, operational and technical biotechnology experience to Halozyme. Mr. Kelley has been the managing director of K2 Bioventures, a biomedical startup consulting company, since July 2004. Mr. Kelley currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of privately held PaxVax, Inc. From April 2002 through June 2004, Mr. Kelley was a General Partner at Latterell Venture Partners, where he made investments in early stage biotechnology and medical device startups. Mr. Kelley founded IntraBiotics Pharmaceuticals in January 1994 and over eight years served as CEO, Director and Chair of the Board of Directors. Earlier, Mr. Kelley was an Associate at Institutional Venture Partners (IVP), where he participated in the financing of twenty biotech and medical companies, fifteen of which became public companies. Prior to IVP, he was a consultant for McKinsey & Company and a scientist at Integrated Genetics (acquired by Genzyme). Mr. Kelley earned an M.B.A. from Stanford University and a B.A. in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard University. Mr. Kelley is the Chair of the Board of Directors. |
Gregory Frost |
Dr. Gregory I. Frost, Ph.D., is President, Chief Executive Officer and Director of Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc. Dr. Frost was named Halozyme’s President and Chief Executive Officer in 2010 and has served on the Board of Directors and in various operation roles over the past thirteen years at the Company, including Chief Scientific Officer since 2002. He brought the founding technologies to Halozyme in 1999 and has spent more than sixteen years conducting research on the extracellular matrix. Over the past decade, Dr. Frost has led the R&D efforts at Halozyme from discovery through FDA approval for a number of biotechnology products. Prior to Halozyme, he was a Scientist at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center. In the Department of Pathology at the University of California, San Francisco, his research led directly to the purification, cloning, and characterization of the human hyaluronidase gene family, and the discovery of several metabolic disorders. He has authored multiple scientific peer-reviewed and invited articles in the field and is an inventor on several key patents. Dr. Frost is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research and the American Society of Clinical Oncology and he is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Dr. Frost earned his B.A. in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and his Ph.D. in the Department of Pathology at the University of California, San Francisco. |
Kurt Gustafson |
Mr. Kurt A. Gustafson is Chief Financial Officer, Vice President of Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc. Mr. Gustafson joined Halozyme in 2009 with operational and managerial experience in financial planning and analysis, accounting, treasury and international responsibility gained during his 18 years with Amgen Inc. In his most recent position, as Vice President, Manufacturing Finance, Mr. Gustafson had financial responsibility for each of Amgen’s worldwide manufacturing sites and the Cost Accounting Group. From 2004 to 2006, Mr. Gustafson was Vice President, Finance and CFO of Amgen International, responsible for financial planning and accounting for Ex-US operations. Stationed in Switzerland, Mr. Gustafson was responsible for Amgen’s International Operations, which spanned Europe, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, North Africa and Australia. From 2000 to 2004, Mr. Gustafson headed up Corporate Financial Planning and Analysis, most recently as Vice President, Corporate Financial Planning & Analysis. From 1991 to 2000, Mr. Gustafson held multiple positions in Amgen’s Treasury group with increasing levels of responsibility, most recently serving as Treasurer, where he oversaw the tax department and the customer finance group. Prior to joining Amgen, Mr. Gustafson worked in public accounting as Staff Auditor at Laventhol & Horwath in Chicago. He earned a B.A. in accounting from North Park University in Chicago and an M.B.A. from University of California, Los Angeles. |
H. Michael Shepard |
Dr. H. Michael Shepard, Ph.D., is Vice President, Chief Scientific Officer of Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc. Dr. Shepard joined Halozyme in 2009 as Vice President, Discovery Research with experience in the biotechnology industry. He was promoted to Chief Scientific Officer in December 2010. Dr. Shepard has been a founder or co-founder of several biotechnology companies and his work has included protein therapeutics (Receptor BioLogix, Inc., 2003-2008), small molecules (NewBiotics, Inc., 1997-2002), gene therapy (Canji, Inc./Schering-Plough Corporation, 1992-1997), and monoclonal antibody therapeutics (Genentech, Inc. 1980-1992). While at Genentech, Dr. Shepard participated in many of the early programs that transformed Genentech into a commercial success. Among his most important accomplishments was the description of a key mechanism by which tumor cells can escape the host immune system. This work led to the discovery of the breast cancer drug Herceptin® (trastuzumab). In 2007, Dr. Shepard shared the Warren Alpert Prize from Harvard Medical School in recognition of this achievement. Dr. Shepard received his bachelor’s degree in Zoology from the University of California, Davis and his Ph.D. in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology from Indiana University. Dr. Shepard was also a postdoctoral fellow at Indiana University, supported by the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation. |
Jean Liu |
Ms. Jean I. Liu, J.D., is Vice President, General Counsel, Secretary of Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc. Ms. Liu joined Halozyme in 2011. Prior to Halozyme, she served as the Chief Legal Officer and Secretary of Durect Corporation (“Durect”) from 1998 to 2011. She has 20 years of professional experience advising pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. Ms. Liu’s early career included work at Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro (now Pillsbury Winthrop) and the Venture Law Group where she focused on broad areas of legal advisory for early stage companies, including technology transfer, licensing, patents, and copyright and trademark litigation. During her tenure at Durect, she held a number of titled roles as the senior most legal officer where her experience expanded to include securities and regulatory law, M & A and financing, corporate governance and board matters. Ms. Liu obtained her B.S. in Biology with highest distinction from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, her M.S.in Biology from Stanford University, and her J.D. from Columbia University where she was a Harlan Fiske Scholar. |

Mr. James P. Shaffer is Vice President, Chief Commercial Officer of Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc. Mr. James Shaffer joined Halozyme in 2011 with over 23 years of Commercial Operations experience. From 2007 to 2011, he was at Clinical Data, Inc. where he was responsible for Marketing, Sales, Business Development and Manufacturing with his most recent position as Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer. Mr. Matthew L. Posard has been appointed as Director of Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc. Mr. Posard has over two decades of experience in strategic and product marketing. He joined Illumina in 2006 as Vice President of Global Marketing and served as Vice President of Global Sales from 2007 to 2011, Illumina's commercial entry into the life science sequencing market where it now holds market share alongside the company's array business. Prior to joining Illumina, he held a variety of positions with the product marketing team at Gen-Probe, Inc., helping the company attain market positions in DNA probe-based infectious disease diagnostics and blood banking. He also oversaw global marketing at Biosite, Inc., where he was instrumental in the introduction of the company's BNP congestive heart failure biomarker and its BNP co-marketing collaboration with Beckman Coulter. Robert Engler |
Dr. Robert L. Engler, M.D., is Independent Director of Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc. Dr. Engler brings medical and clinical experience to the Board. Dr. Engler spent his career as a cardiologist at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the University of California, San Diego, where he retired as Professor Emeritus in 2001. While at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Dr. Engler served as Associate Chief of Staff and Chief of Research and was an attending physician, in addition to running an active cardiovascular research laboratory. His research and clinical work led to the founding of two biotechnology companies: Gensia, Inc., and Collateral Therapeutics, Inc. He also founded and served as President and Chairman of the Board of the Veterans Medical Research Foundation, where he currently serves on the Board of Directors. Ms. Kathryn E. Falberg is Independent Director of Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc. Ms. Falberg contributes considerable healthcare industry knowledge, particularly in the areas of finance, accounting and operations. Ms. Connie L. Matsui is Independent Director of Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc. Ms. Matsui brings to Board over 16 years of general management experience in the biotechnology industry. Prior to her retirement in January 2009, she was the Executive Vice President, Knowledge and Innovation Networks for Biogen Idec, Inc. She served in several positions since joining IDEC Pharmaceuticals in November 1992, including Senior Vice President, overseeing investor relations, corporate communications, human resources, project management and strategic planning. Dr. John S. Patton, Ph.D., is Independent Director of Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc. Dr. Patton brings to Board scientific and operational experience in the biotechnology industry. Dr. Patton is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of Dance Pharmaceuticals as well as the Executive Chairman of Pleiades Cardio-Therapeutics, Inc. Dr. Patton co-founded Nektar Therapeutics (Nasdaq-NKTR) (formerly Inhale Therapeutic Systems) and he served as Chief Scientific Officer from November 2001, and as a director from 1990, through 2008. He is the delivery of peptides and proteins. Before co-founding Nektar Therapeutics, Dr. Patton led the drug delivery group at Genentech, Inc., where he demonstrated the feasibility of systemic delivery of molecules through the lungs. Prior to joining Genentech, Inc., he was a tenured professor at the University of Georgia. He has published a wide range of articles and has presented his work in national and international arenas. Dr. Patton received his Ph.D. in Biology from the University of California, San Diego, and held post-doctoral positions in biomedicine at Harvard Medical School and the University of Lund in Sweden.
