Name Description
Chess, Robert Mr. Robert B. Chess is Chairman of board of directors of Nektar Therapeutics and has served as a director since May 1992. Mr. Chess is currently Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NanOasis, Inc., a start-up company focused on water desalinization technology. He is also currently the Chairman of OpX Biotechnologies, a start-up platform technology company in the biofuels and biorefined chemicals field. From March 2006 until January 2007, Mr. Chess served as Acting President and Chief Executive Officer, and from April 1999 to January 2007, served as Executive Chairman. He also served as Co-Chief Executive Officer from August 1998 to April 2000, as President from December 1991 to August 1998, and as Chief Executive Officer from May 1992 to August 1998. Mr. Chess was previously the co-Founder and President of Penederm, Inc., a publicly-traded dermatological pharmaceutical company that was sold to Mylan Laboratories. He has held management positions at Intel Corporation and Metaphor Computer Systems (now part of IBM), and was a member of the first President Bush’s White House staff. Since 1997, Mr. Chess has served on the board of directors of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO). Mr. Chess was Co-Chairman of BIO’s Intellectual Property Committee, and has served as Chairman of BIO’s Emerging Company Section. Mr. Chess is Chairman of Bio Ventures for Global Health and is on the Board of Trustees of the California Institute of Technology and the Committee for Economic Development. He is a member of the faculty of the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he teaches courses in Entrepreneurship and Management of Health Care Innovation, and is an Adjunct Fellow at Stanford’s Center for Health Policy. Mr. Chess received his B.S. degree in Engineering from the California Institute of Technology and an M.B.A. from Harvard.
Robin, Howard Mr. Howard W. Robin has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Nektar Therapeutics since January 2007 and has served as a member of board of directors since February 2007. Mr. Robin served as Chief Executive Officer, President and a director of Sirna Therapeutics, Inc., a biotechnology company, from July 2001 to November 2006 and from January 2001 to June 2001, served as their Chief Operating Officer, President and as director. From 1991 to 2001, Mr. Robin was Corporate Vice President and General Manager at Berlex Laboratories, Inc., a pharmaceutical products company that is a subsidiary of Schering, AG, and from 1987 to 1991 he served as Vice President of Finance and Business Development and Chief Financial Officer. Nicholson, John Mr. John Nicholson has served as Nektar Therapeutics's Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer since December 2007. Mr. Nicholson joined the Company as Senior Vice President of Corporate Development and Business Operations in October 2007 and was appointed Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer in December 2007. Before joining Nektar, Mr. Nicholson spent 18 years in various executive roles at Schering Berlin, Inc., the U.S. management holding company of Bayer Schering Pharma AG, a pharmaceutical company. From 1997, he served as Schering Berlin Inc.’s Vice President of Corporate Development and Treasurer. Chowrira, Bharatt Dr. Bharatt M. Chowrira, Ph.D., J.D., has served as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Nektar Therapeutics since May 2008, as well as Chairman of Nektar Therapeutics India Pvt. Ltd. From January 2007 until May 2008, Dr. Chowrira, served as Executive Director, Licensing / External Research at Merck & Co., Inc., a global pharmaceutical company. From January 2005 through 2006, Dr. Chowrira served as Chief Patent Counsel and Vice President, Legal Affairs of Sirna Therapeutics, Inc., a clinical-stage biotechnology company pioneering RNAi-based therapies for serious diseases and conditions that was acquired by Merck & Co. in January 2007. In that position, Dr. Chowrira was responsible for all legal and business licensing activities and general corporate matters. From January 2002 until December 2004, Dr. Chowrira was Vice President of Legal Affairs, Licensing and Patent Counsel at Sirna Therapeutics. Dr. Chowrira joined Sirna Therapeutics (then operating as Ribozyme Pharmaceuticals Inc.) in 1993 as a scientist. Dr. Chowrira holds a J.D. from the College of Law at the University of Denver and a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics from the University of Vermont. Dr. Chowrira is a member of the Colorado Bar Association, admitted to practice in California as a registered in-house counsel, and is a registered patent attorney before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He is also a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, Licensing Executive Society and the Association of Corporate Counsel.
Doberstein, Stephen Dr. Stephen K. Doberstein, Ph.D., has been appointed as Senior Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer of Nektar Therapeutics. Dr. Doberstein brings over 17 years of experience in biotechnology research and development to Nektar. Prior to joining Nektar, Dr. Doberstein was Vice President of Research at Xoma where he was responsible for directing the discovery and development of their drug candidates, including antibody discovery and support of clinical development through non-clinical safety, translational medicine and pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics. Prior to that, Dr. Doberstein served as Vice President, Research at Five Prime Therapeutics, Inc, a protein and antibody discovery and development company where he built and led a high performance discovery research and process development group. While at Five Prime, he established programs resulting in multiple strategic alliances with pharmaceutical partners, built a strong proprietary pipeline, and moved multiple product candidates from concept to pre-IND stages in diabetes, oncology, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Prior to that, Dr. Doberstein was Vice President, Research at Xencor, an antibody and protein engineering and development company. At Xencor, he was instrumental in advancing its protein platform technologies and preclinical product candidates. Before that, he also held a number of senior positions at Exelixis. Dr. Doberstein received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and completed his postdoctoral work at UC Berkeley. Earlier in his career, Dr. Doberstein held a variety of engineering roles at DuPont after receiving his B.S.Ch.E. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Delaware.
Labrucherie, Gil Mr. Gil M. Labrucherie has served as Nektar Therapeutics's Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary since April 2007, responsible for all aspects of the legal affairs. Mr. Labrucherie served as our Vice President, Corporate Legal from October 2005 through April 2007. From October 2000 to September 2005, Mr. Labrucherie was Vice President of Corporate Development at E2open. While at E2open, Mr. Labrucherie was responsible for global corporate alliances and merger and acquisition activity. Prior to E2open, he was the Senior Director of Corporate Development at AltaVista Company, an Internet search company, where he was responsible for strategic partnerships and mergers and acquisitions. Mr. Labrucherie began his career as an associate in the corporate practice of the law firm of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati and Graham & James (DLA Piper Rudnick). Mr. Labrucherie received his J.D. from the Berkeley Law School and a B.A. from the University of California Davis.
Masuoka, Lorianne Dr. Lorianne Masuoka, M.D. has been appointed as Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Nektar Therapeutics. Dr. Masuoka has over 15 years of experience in clinical research and development. As Chief Medical Officer, she will be instrumental in helping to develop Nektar's clinical development strategy while continuing to oversee all clinical development functions, including Clinical Operations, Clinical Pharmacology, Drug Safety, Biometrics and Data Management. Dr. Masuoka joined Nektar in August 2008 as Vice President of Clinical Development. Prior to Nektar, Lorianne was Vice President of Clinical Development at Five Prime Therapeutics where she led the advancement of a number of protein and antibody therapeutics in the areas of oncology, immunology and metabolic disease. Prior to that, Lorianne held senior leadership positions at Chiron and Berlex, where she was instrumental in development of Betaseron(R) for relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis as well as numerous oncology programs. Dr. Masuoka received her B.S. and M.D. from the University of California, Davis and completed her fellowship at the Yale School of Medicine.
Thomsen, Jillian Ms. Jillian B. Thomsen has served as Vice President Finance and Chief Accounting Officer of Nektar Therapeutics since April 2008. Ms. Thomsen joined Nektar in March 2006 as Vice President Finance and Corporate Controller. Before joining Nektar, Ms. Thomsen was Vice President Finance and Deputy Corporate Controller of Calpine Corporation from September 2002 to February 2006. Previously, Ms. Thomsen is a certified public accountant and was a senior manager at Arthur Andersen LLP, where she worked from 1990 to 2002, and specialized in audits of multinational consumer products, life sciences, manufacturing and energy companies. Ms. Thomsen holds a Masters of Accountancy from the University of Denver and a B.A. in Business Economics from Colorado College.
Whitfield, Roy Mr. Roy A. Whitfield has served as Director of Nektar Therapeutics since August 2000. He currently serves as a director of Incyte Corporation, a drug discovery and development company, Illumina, Inc., a developer, manufacturer and marketer of integrated systems for analysis of genetic variations and biological functions, and the private companies Sciona, Inc. and Bioseek, Inc. Since February 2008, he has also served as Executive Chairman of the board of directors of Bioseek. Mr. Whitfield is the former Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Incyte Corporation, a company he co-founded in 1991. From January 1993 to November 2001, Mr. Whitfield served as its Chief Executive Officer and from November 2001 until June 2003 as its Chairman. From 1984 to 1989, Mr. Whitfield held senior operating and business development positions with Technicon Instruments Corporation, a medical instrumentation company, and its predecessor company, Cooper Biomedical, Inc., a biotechnology and medical diagnostics company. Prior to his work at Technicon, Mr. Whitfield spent seven years with the Boston Consulting Group’s international consulting practice. Mr. Whitfield was awarded a B.S. in mathematics from Oxford University and an M.B.A. from Stanford University.
Kuebler, Christopher Mr. Christopher A. Kuebler has served as Director of Nektar Therapeutics since December 2001. Mr. Kuebler also currently serves on the board of directors of Waters Corporation, an analytical technologies services company. From January 1997 to December 2005, Mr. Kuebler served as Chairman of the Board of Covance Inc., a drug development services company, and from November 1994 to December 2004, served as its Chief Executive Officer. From March 1993 through November 1994, he was the Corporate Vice President, European Operations for Abbott Laboratories, a diversified health care company. From January 1986 until March 1993, Mr. Kuebler served in various commercial positions for Abbott Laboratories’ Pharmaceutical Division and was that Division’s Vice President, Sales and Marketing prior to taking the position of Corporate Vice President, European Operations. Before that, he held positions at Squibb Inc. and Monsanto Health Care. Mr. Kuebler holds a B.S. in Biological Science from Florida State University.
Wang, Susan Ms. Susan Wang has served as Director of Nektar Therapeutics since December 2003. Ms. Wang, who retired from Solectron Corporation in May 2002, served in various management positions there from 1984 to June 2002. Her final position at Solectron, an electronics manufacturing services and supply chain solutions company, was Executive Vice President for Corporate Development and Chief Financial Officer, a position she held from September 2001 to June 2002. Prior to joining Solectron, Ms. Wang held financial and managerial positions with Xerox Corporation and Westvaco Corporation. She began her career with Price Waterhouse & Co. in New York and is a certified public accountant. Ms. Wang is also a director of Altera Corporation, a programmable semiconductor company, Rae Systems, Inc., a developer of sensory technology for hazardous materials, and Suntech Powers, Inc., a solar provider. Ms. Wang holds an M.B.A. from the University of Connecticut and a B.S. in accounting from the University of Texas.
Krivulka, Joseph Mr. Joseph Krivulka has served as Director of Nektar Therapeutics since March 2005. Mr. Krivulka is founder and President of Triax Pharmaceuticals, a dermatology products company, a position he has held since November 2004. Mr. Krivulka is also the founder and Chairman of Akrimax Pharmaceuticals, LLC, an emerging branded and contract manufacturing pharmaceutical company. Mr. Krivulka was a co-founder and President of Reliant Pharmaceuticals, LLC, a company that markets pharmaceutical products, from 1999 until 2004. Mr. Krivulka was formerly Chief Executive Officer of Bertek, Inc., a generic pharmaceutical products company that is a subsidiary of Mylan Laboratories Inc., and Corporate Vice President of Mylan Laboratories, a generic pharmaceutical products company. Huh, Hoyoung Dr. Hoyoung Huh has served as Director of Nektar Therapeutics since February 2008. Since March 2008, Dr. Huh has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of BiPar Sciences, a privately held biopharmaceutical company focused on oncology therapeutics. From May 2007 through February 2008, Dr. Huh served as Chief Operating Officer and Head of the PEGylation Business Unit, responsible for the Company’s worldwide business development, marketing, manufacturing and Nektar’s PEGylation business. From March 2005 through April 2007, he served as the Company’s Senior Vice President of Business Development and Marketing. From September 1997 to February 2005, Dr. Huh was a leader in the healthcare and biotechnology practice at McKinsey and Company, a management consulting firm, where he was elected partner in 2003. He currently serves on the Board of BayBio, a biotechnology industry association. Dr. Huh holds an M.D. from Cornell University Medical College, a Ph.D. in Genetics and Cell Biology from the Cornell University/Sloan Kettering Institute, and an A.B. in Biochemistry from Dartmouth College.
Lingnau, Lutz Mr. Lutz Lingnau has served as Director of Nektar Therapeutics since August 2007. Mr. Lingnau retired from Schering AG Group, Germany, in December 2005 as a member of Schering AG’s Executive Board and as Vice Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Schering Berlin, Inc., a United States subsidiary. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Lingnau was responsible for Schering AG’s worldwide specialized therapeutics and dermatology businesses. He joined Schering AG’s business trainee program in 1966. Throughout his career at Schering AG, he served in various capacities and in a number of subsidiaries in South America and the United States, including his roles as President of Berlex Laboratories, Inc., from 1983 to 1985, as the Head of Worldwide Sales and Marketing in the Pharmaceutical Division of Schering AG, from 1985 to 1989, and as Chairman of Berlex Laboratories, Inc. from 1985 to 2005. Mr. Lingnau is currently a member of the Supervisory Board of LANXESS AG, a specialty chemicals company listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, Chairman of the board of directors of Micropharma Limited, a private biotechnology company, and was a member of the board of directors of Sirna Therapeutics, Inc., a biotechnology company, from February 2006 through the closing of the acquisition of Sirna by Merck & Co., Inc. in December 2006.
Winger, Dennis Mr. Dennis L. Winger serves as Director of Nektar Therapeutics. He is currently a director of Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Cephalon Inc. and Accuray Inc. He retired in 2008 from Applera Corporation, a life sciences company, where he was senior vice president and chief financial officer. Previously, Mr. Winger was senior vice president of finance, administration and chief financial officer at Chiron Corporation. Before that, Mr. Winger held various financial executive leadership roles with divisions of The Cooper Companies. Mr. Winger has played a significant role in merger and acquisition, financing and divestiture transactions and in managing process and systems growth within accounting, finance and treasury functions. He holds an MBA from Columbia University Graduate School of Business and he earned his undergraduate degree from Siena College.
Greer, R. Scott Mr. R. Scott Greer has been appointed as the Director of Nektar Therapeutics. Mr. Greer is currently Managing Director of Numenor Ventures, LLC, where he has made direct investments in nearly twenty healthcare, technology, and consumer product companies. Mr. Greer founded Abgenix, Inc., a biotechnology company focused on developing human antibody-based therapeutics. He served as Abgenix's Chief Executive Officer from 1996 to 2002, and its Chairman from 2000 to 2006 when the company was acquired by Amgen, Inc. for approximately $2.2 billion. Mr. Greer invested in and served as Chairman of the Board of Sirna Therapeutics, a publicly-traded biotechnology company that was sold to Merck for more than $1.1 billion in December 2006. Prior to forming Abgenix, Mr. Greer spent five years at Cell Genesys, Inc., initially as Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Corporate Development and later as Senior Vice President of Corporate Development. Mr. Greer is currently Chairman of the Board of Acologix, Inc., a development-stage biotechnology company and in the past has served on the boards of numerous public and private life sciences companies.
