Biographies

Name Description

Robert Chess

 Mr. Robert B. Chess is an Independent Chairman of board of Directors of Nektar Therapeutics. He is the Chairman of board of directors and has served as a director since May 1992. He is currently the chairman of the board of directors of OPX Biotechnologies, a private company in the renewable fuels and chemicals field, and chairman of the board of directors of Germitec SAS, a private company in the medical instrument disinfection field. From March 2006 until January 2007, Mr. Chess served as Acting President and Chief Executive Officer, and from April 1999 to January 2007, served as Executive Chairman. He also served as Co-Chief Executive Officer from August 1998 to April 2000, as President from December 1991 to August 1998, and as Chief Executive Officer from May 1992 to August 1998. Mr. Chess was previously the co-Founder and President of Penederm, Inc., a publicly-traded dermatological pharmaceutical company that was sold to Mylan Laboratories. He has held management positions at Intel Corporation and Metaphor Computer Systems (now part of IBM), and was a member of the first President Bush’s White House staff as a White House Fellow and Associate Director of the White House Office of Economic and Domestic Policy. From 1997 until his retirement in 2009, He also serves on the Board of Trustees of the California Institute of Technology and as a trustee of the Committee for Economic Development where he is co-chairman of its Health Care task force. Mr. Chess also serves as a director of NanOasis, Inc., a private company focused on desalinization technology, and Pelvalon, Inc., a private medical device company. He is currently a member of the faculty of the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he teaches courses in the MBA program on starting technology-based businesses and the healthcare industry. Mr. Chess received his B.S. degree in Engineering from the California Institute of Technology and an M.B.A. from Harvard.

Howard Robin

 Mr. Howard W. Robin is President, Chief Executive Officer, Director of Nektar Therapeutics. He has served as President and Chief Executive Officer since January 2007 and has served as a member of board of directors since February 2007. Mr. Robin served as Chief Executive Officer, President and a director of Sirna Therapeutics, Inc., a biotechnology company, from July 2001 to November 2006 and from January 2001 to June 2001, served as their Chief Operating Officer, President and as director. From 1991 to 2001, Mr. Robin was Corporate Vice President and General Manager at Berlex Laboratories, Inc., a pharmaceutical products company that is a subsidiary of Schering, AG, and from 1987 to 1991 he served as Vice President of Finance and Business Development and Chief Financial Officer. From 1984 to 1987, Mr. Robin was Director of Business Planning and Development at Berlex. He was a Senior Associate with Arthur Andersen & Co. prior to joining Berlex. Mr. Robin serves as a director of the Biotechnology Industry Organization, the world’s biotechnology industry trade organization, and also serves as a director of BayBio, a non-profit trade association serving the Northern California life sciences community. He received his B.S. in Accounting and Finance from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1974.

John Nicholson

 Mr. John Nicholson is Chief Financial Officer, Senior Vice President of Nektar Therapeutics. Mr. Nicholson joined the Company as Senior Vice President of Corporate Development and Business Operations in October 2007 and was appointed Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer in December 2007. Before joining Nektar, Mr. Nicholson spent 18 years in various executive roles at Schering Berlin, Inc., the U.S. management holding company of Bayer Schering Pharma AG, a pharmaceutical company. From 1997 to September 2007, Mr. Nicholson served as Schering Berlin Inc.’s Vice President of Corporate Development and Treasurer. From 2001 to September 2007, he concurrently served as President of Schering Berlin Insurance Co., and from February 2007 through September 2007, he also concurrently served as President of Bayer Pharma Chemicals and Schering Berlin Capital Corp. Mr. Nicholson holds a B.B.A. from the University of Toledo.

Jillian Thomsen

 Ms. Jillian B. Thomsen is Senior Vice President - Finance, Chief Accounting Officer of Nektar Therapeutics. From March 2006 through March 2008, Ms. Thomsen served as the company's Vice President Finance and Corporate Controller and from April 2008 through January 2010 she served as the company's Vice President Finance and Chief Accounting Officer. Before joining Nektar, Ms. Thomsen was Vice President Finance and Deputy Corporate Controller of Calpine Corporation from September 2002 to February 2006. Ms. Thomsen is a certified public accountant and previously was a senior manager at Arthur Andersen LLP, where she worked from 1990 to 2002, and specialized in audits of multinational consumer products, life sciences, manufacturing and energy companies. Ms. Thomsen holds a Masters of Accountancy from the University of Denver and a B.A. in Business Economics from Colorado College.

Stephen Doberstein

 Dr. Stephen K. Doberstein, Ph.D., is Senior Vice President, Chief Scientific Officer of Nektar Therapeutics. From October 2008 through December 2009, Dr. Doberstein served as Vice President, Research at Xoma (US) LLC, a publicly traded clinical stage biotechnology company. From July 2004 until August 2008, he served as Vice President, Research at privately held Five Prime Therapeutics, a clinical stage biotechnology company. From September 2001 until July 2004, Dr. Doberstein was Vice President, Research at privately held Xencor, Inc., a clinical stage biotechnology company. From 1997 to 2000, he held various pharmaceutical research positions at Exelixis, Inc., a publicly traded clinical stage biotechnology company. Prior to working at Exelixis, Dr. Doberstein was a Howard Hughes Postdoctoral Fellow and a Muscular Dystrophy Association Senior Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California Berkeley. Dr. Doberstein received his Ph.D. Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Delaware.

Gil Labrucherie

 Mr. Gil M. Labrucherie, J.D., is Senior Vice President, General Counsel, Secretary of Nektar Therapeutics. He is responsible for all aspects of the company's legal affairs. Mr. Labrucherie served as the company's Vice President, Corporate Legal from October 2005 through April 2007. From October 2000 to September 2005, Mr. Labrucherie was Vice President of Corporate Development at E2open. While at E2open, Mr. Labrucherie was responsible for global corporate alliances and merger and acquisition activity. Prior to E2open, he was the Senior Director of Corporate Development at AltaVista Company, an Internet search company, where he was responsible for strategic partnerships and mergers and acquisitions. Mr. Labrucherie began his career as an associate in the corporate practice of the law firm of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati and Graham & James (DLA Piper Rudnick). Mr. Labrucherie received his J.D. from the Berkeley Law School and a B.A. from the University of California Davis.

Rinko Ghosh

 Mr. Rinko Ghosh is Senior Vice President and Chief Business Officer of Nektar Therapeutics. He served as the company's Senior Vice President, Business Development and Alliance Management from March 2008 through February 2010, the company's Vice President, Business Development from August 2006 until February 2008, Senior Director, Business Development from July 2005 until July 2006, and prior to that he worked in a variety of corporate and business development roles for the company from May 2001 to June 2005. From February 2001 to April 2001, he was engaged as a commercial development consultant at Aviron (now Medimmune/AstraZeneca) in Palo Alto. Maninder Hora

 Dr. Maninder Hora, Ph.D., is Senior Vice President - Pharmaceutical Development and Manufacturing Operations of Nektar Therapeutics. From December 2008 to July 2010, he was Vice President, Product and Quality Operations at Facet Biotech Corporation, a clinical stage biotechnology company, which was acquired by Abbot in April 2010. From July 2006 to December 2008, Dr. Hora served in various management capacities at PDL Biopharma, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company, most recently as Vice President, Product Operations. From 1986 to 2006, Dr. Hora held positions of increasing responsibility with Chiron Corporation (now Novartis), a pharmaceutical company, serving most recently at Chiron as Vice President of Process and Product Development. Dr. Hora served as a key member of various teams that registered eight drugs or vaccines in the U.S. and Europe during his 20-year tenure at Chiron. Dr. Hora has also held positions at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and GlaxoSmithKline PLC prior to joining Chiron. Dr. Hora completed his Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, India, and was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Washington, and received his B.S. in chemistry from the University of Jabalpur.

Robert Medve

 Dr. Robert A. Medve, M.D., is Senior Vice President, Chief Medical Officer of Nektar Therapeutics. He previously served as Vice President Drug Development and Medical Affairs when he joined Nektar in March 2011 until June 2011. From November 2006 to March 2011, he was Chief Medical and Regulatory Officer at NeurAxon, Inc., a privately held biotechnology company developing drug candidates for the treatment of pain and CNS disorders. From April 2006 to November 2006, Dr. Medve served as Corporate Vice President, Science, Research and Development for Lifetree Clinical Research, and thereafter served in a consulting capacity from time to time. From May 2003 to November 2005, Dr. Medve served as Senior Vice President, Drug Development and Chief Medical and Regulatory Officer for Metaphore Pharmaceuticals, a biotechnology company developing drug candidates for pain and inflammation. From January 1998 to May 2003, he served in various leadership positions at Johnson & Johnson, a pharmaceutical company, most recently as Executive Director of Pediatric Drug Development. From May 1996 to January 1998, he served in the medical affairs group at Knoll Pharmaceutical Company, a wholly-owned pharmaceutical subsidiary of BASF acquired by Abbot in 2001, most recently as Director of Medical Affairs. Prior to joining industry, Dr. Medve served as the Director of Pediatric Pain Management and Instructor of Anesthesiology at the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNY) and also completed a Pain Management Fellowship at SUNY. He completed his residency in anesthesia at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and served as a surgical intern at Mercy Health Systems Medical Center. Dr. Medve received his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College and received his B.S. in Biology from the Pennsylvania State University.

R. Scott Greer

 Mr. R. Scott Greer is an Independent Director of Nektar Therapeutics since February 2010. Since June 2003, Mr. Greer has served as Managing Director of Numenor Ventures, LLC, a venture capital firm. In 1996, Mr. Greer co-founded Abgenix, Inc., a company that specialized in the discovery, development and manufacture of human therapeutic antibodies, and from June 1996 through May 2002, he served as its Chief Executive Officer. He also served as a director of Abgenix from 1996 and Chairman of the board of directors from 2000 until the acquisition of Abgenix by Amgen, Inc. in April 2006. Prior to Abgenix’s formation, Mr. Greer held senior management positions at Cell Genesys, Inc., a biotechnology company, initially as Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Corporate Development and later as Senior Vice President of Corporate Development, and various positions at Genetics Institute, Inc., a biotechnology research and development company. Mr. Greer served as a member of the board of directors of Sirna Therapeutics, Inc., a biotechnology company, from 2003, and as its Chairman of the board of directors from 2005, through the closing of the acquisition of Sirna by Merck & Co., Inc. in December 2006. From 2001 to 2005, Mr. Greer served as a member of the board of directors of Illumina, Inc., a provider of integrated systems for the analysis of genetic variation and biological function, and from 2001 to 2004, he served as member of the board of directors of CV Therapeutics, Inc., a biotechnology company. He currently serves as a member of the board of directors of StemCells, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company focused on stem cell therapeutics, chairman of the board of directors of Ablexis LLC, a private development-stage biotechnology company, and also serves as a director of BAROnova, Inc., a private clinical-stage medical device company. Mr. Greer received a B.A. in Economics from Whitman College and an M.B.A. degree from Harvard University. He also was a certified public accountant.

Joseph Krivulka

 Mr. Joseph J. Krivulka is an Independent Director of Nektar Therapeutics since March 2005. Mr. Krivulka is founder and President of Triax Pharmaceuticals, a dermatology products company, a position he has held since November 2004. Mr. Krivulka is also the founder and Chairman of Akrimax Pharmaceuticals, LLC, an emerging branded and contract manufacturing pharmaceutical company. Mr. Krivulka was a co-founder and President of Reliant Pharmaceuticals, LLC, a company that markets pharmaceutical products, from 1999 until 2004. Mr. Krivulka was Chief Executive Officer of Bertek, Inc., a generic pharmaceutical products company that is a subsidiary of Mylan Laboratories Inc. from 1993 to 1997, and Corporate Vice President of Mylan Laboratories, a generic pharmaceutical products company from 1990 to 1997. Mr. Krivulka is also a director of Aeolus Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a drug development services company. He holds a B.S. from West Virginia Wesleyan College.

Christopher Kuebler

 Mr. Christopher A. Kuebler is an Independent Director of Nektar Therapeutics since December 2001. Mr. Kuebler also currently serves on the board of directors of Waters Corporation, an analytical technologies services company. From January 1997 to December 2005, Mr. Kuebler served as Chairman of the Board of Covance Inc., a drug development services company, and from November 1994 to December 2004, served as its Chief Executive Officer. From March 1993 through November 1994, he was the Corporate Vice President, European Operations for Abbott Laboratories, a diversified health care company. From January 1986 until March 1993, Mr. Kuebler served in various commercial positions for Abbott Laboratories’ Pharmaceutical Division and was that Division’s Vice President, Sales and Marketing prior to taking the position of Corporate Vice President, European Operations. Lutz Lingnau

 Mr. Lutz Lingnau is an Independent Director of Nektar Therapeutics since August 2007. Mr. Lingnau retired from Schering AG Group, Germany, in December 2005 as a member of Schering AG’s Executive Board and as Vice Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Schering Berlin, Inc., a United States subsidiary. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Lingnau was responsible for Schering AG’s worldwide specialized therapeutics and dermatology businesses. He joined Schering AG’s business trainee program in 1966. Throughout his career at Schering AG, he served in various capacities and in a number of subsidiaries in South America and the United States, including his roles as President of Berlex Laboratories, Inc., from 1983 to 1985, as the Head of Worldwide Sales and Marketing in the Pharmaceutical Division of Schering AG, from 1985 to 1989, and as Chairman of Berlex Laboratories, Inc. from 1985 to 2005. From 2005 to May 2010, Mr. Lingnau was a member of the Supervisory Board of LANXESS AG, a specialty chemicals company. From December 2006 through September 2009, he served as Chairman of the board of directors of Micropharma Limited, a private biotechnology company, and was a member of the board of directors of Sirna Therapeutics, Inc., a biotechnology company, from February 2006 through the closing of the acquisition of Sirna by Merck & Co., Inc. in December 2006.

Susan Wang

 Ms. Susan Wang., CPA., is an Independent Director of Nektar Therapeutics since December 2003. Ms. Wang, who retired from Solectron Corporation in May 2002, served in various management positions there from 1984 to June 2002. Her final position at Solectron, an electronics manufacturing services and supply chain solutions company, was Executive Vice President for Corporate Development and Chief Financial Officer, a position she held from September 2001 to June 2002. Prior to joining Solectron, Ms. Wang held financial and managerial positions with Xerox Corporation and Westvaco Corporation. She began her career with Price Waterhouse & Co. in New York and is a certified public accountant. Ms. Wang is also a director of Altera Corporation, a programmable semiconductor company, Cirrus Logic, Inc., an analog chip company, and Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd., a solar energy company. In addition, Ms. Wang served as a director of Calpine Corporation, an independent power generation company, from 2003 to 2009, Avanex Corporation, a telecommunications component and sub-systems provider, from 2002 to 2009, and Rae Systems Inc., a developer of sensory technology for hazardous materials from 2009 to 2011. Ms. Wang holds an M.B.A. from the University of Connecticut and a B.S. in accounting from the University of Texas.

Roy Whitfield

 Mr. Roy A. Whitfield is an Independent Director of Nektar Therapeutics since August 2000. Mr. Whitfield is the former Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Incyte Corporation, a drug discovery and development company he co-founded in 1991. From January 1993 to November 2001, Mr. Whitfield served as its Chief Executive Officer and from November 2001 until June 2003 as its Chairman. From 1984 to 1989, Mr. Whitfield held senior operating and business development positions with Technicon Instruments Corporation, a medical instrumentation company, and its predecessor company, Cooper Biomedical, Inc., a biotechnology and medical diagnostics company. Prior to his work at Technicon, Mr. Whitfield spent seven years with the Boston Consulting Group’s international consulting practice. He currently serves as a director of Incyte Corporation, Illumina, Inc., a developer, manufacturer and marketer of integrated systems for analysis of genetic variations and biological functions, and Station X, Inc., a private development stage company. Since February 2008, he has also served as Executive Chairman of the board of directors of Bioseek. Mr. Whitfield received a B.S. in mathematics from Oxford University and an M.B.A. from Stanford University.

Dennis Winger

 Mr. Dennis L. Winger is an Independent Director of Nektar Therapeutics since December 2009. Mr. Winger was Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Applera Corporation, a life sciences company, from 1997 through December 2008. From 1989 to 1997, Mr. Winger served as Senior Vice President, Finance and Administration, and Chief Financial Officer of Chiron Corporation.
