Name Description

Daniel Houston

Mr. Daniel J. Houston is Chairman of the Board, President, Chief Executive Officer of the Company. He has been appointed to the position of Chairman of the Board of the Company., effective 17 May 2016. He was Chief Operating Officer of Principal Financial Group Inc., since November 2014. He joined the Company in 1984 and has held a number of management positions in the Company. He was named Executive Vice President in 2006, and President of Retirement and Investor Services in 2008. He became President-Retirement, Insurance and Financial Services in 2009. He is active on a number of boards, including the Partnership for a Healthier America, Employee Benefits Research Institute, America's Health Insurance Plans, United Way of Central Iowa and the Iowa State University Business School Dean's Advisory Council and formerly served on the board of Mercy Medical Center and the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation. Mr. Houston received a bachelor's of science degree from Iowa State University in 1984

Terrance Lillis

Mr. Terrance J. Lillis is no longer Chief Financial Officer, Executive Vice President of Principal Financial Group Inc., effective April 2017. Prior to that date, he was Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the Company and Principal Life since August 2008 and Senior Vice President of the Company and Principal Life since May 2008.

Deanna Strable-Soethout

Ms. Deanna D. Strable-Soethout has been Chief Financial Officer, Executive Vice President, President - United States Insurance Solutions of the Company. She has been appointed as Chief Financial Officer, Executive Vice President effective February 14, 2017. In 2015, Strable was named president of the United States Insurance Solutions responsible for all businesses within the Individual Life and Specialty Benefits Divisions of U.S. Insurance Solutions with overall accountability for individual life, nonqualified deferred compensation, individual disability and group benefits. In addition to her role within Principal, Strable currently serves as chair of the Board of Directors for LIMRA LOMA Global (LL Global, Inc) and is a member of the Board of Trustees for Simpson College. She also serves on various committees for United Way of Central Iowa and the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI). A native of Iowa, Strable received her Bachelor's degree with a double major in mathematics and economics from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She is also a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries.

Luis Valdes

Mr. Luis Valdes is President - Principal International Segment of Principal Financial Group, Inc., since February 2014. He has been President, Principal International of the Company and Principal Life since March 2011. Prior to his current position, he has been Senior Vice President and President — PFG Latin America of the Company and Principal Life since March 2010, and was Vice President — Principal International of Principal Life from 2000 until March 2010.

Timothy Dunbar

Mr. Timothy M. Dunbar is Executive Vice President, Chief Investment Officer of Principal Financial Group Inc. Prior to that date, he served as Senior Vice President of the Company and Principal Life since 2011, and Chief Investment Officer of the Company and Principal Life since January 2013. Prior to that date, Mr. Dunbar was in charge of Strategy and Finance for the Company and Principal Life in 2011 and 2012, overseeing the business management and strategic direction of the capital markets, corporate strategy and corporate treasury areas. He retains his responsibility for capital markets. Mr. Dunbar previously served as the executive director and head of equities for Principal Global Investors from 2004 until 2011.

Gary Scholten

Mr. Gary P. Scholten is Executive Vice President, Chief Information Officer of Principal Financial Group Inc., since February 2014. He joined the company in 1980 as an assistant planning analyst. He held numerous management positions in information technology through 2002 when he was named senior vice president and chief information officer. Scholten is a fellow of the Life Office Management Institute and is past chair of the LOMA Individual Product Systems Committee. He chairs Principal Global Services, Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Principal Financial Group located in Pune, India. Scholten currently serves on two Principal International Chilean Boards: Principal International de Chile S.A. and Principal Asset Management Chile S.A. Scholten has served as the chairman of the board for the Technology Association of Iowa. In 2011, he was appointed to serve on the Iowa Governor’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Advisory Council, and joined the group’s executive committee in 2013. Scholten received a bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Iowa.

Karen Shaff

Ms. Karen E. Shaff is Executive Vice President, General Counsel of Principal Financial Group Inc., since February 2014. In addition, Secretary of the Company and Principal Life since January 2014. Prior thereto, she was Senior Vice President and General Counsel of the Company since April 2001, and Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Principal Life since January 2000. Prior thereto, she was Senior Vice President and General Counsel of the Company since April 2001, and Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Principal Life since January 2000.

Mr. Gregory B. Elming is Senior Vice President, Chief Risk Officer of Principal Financial Group Inc. Prior to that time, he was Senior Vice President and Controller of the Company and Principal Life since 2007.

Mark Lagomarcino

Mr. Mark S Lagomarcino Senior Vice President, Deputy General Counsel of the company. He joined the company in 2002. He was promoted to vice president and associate general counsel in 2011. Prior to joining The Principal, he was associate general counsel for Maytag Corporation and was also a partner of Hanson, Bjork and Russell, LLP. A native of Ames, Iowa, Lagomarcino earned his bachelor's degree from Iowa State University and his doctorate of jurisprudence from Drake University Law School. He is a member of the Iowa State Bar Association and the Association of Life Insurance Counsel.

Leanne Valentine

Ms. Leanne Valentine is Senior Vice President, Deputy General Counsel of the company. She joined the company in 1992. She was promoted to vice president and associate general counsel in 2006. A native of Iowa City, Iowa, Valentine earned her bachelor's degree and her doctorate of jurisprudence from the University of Iowa College of Law. She is a member of the Iowa State Bar Association and the Association of Life Insurance Counsel.

Nick Cecere

Mr. Nick Cecere is Senior vice president – U.S. Insurance Solutions Distribution of the company. He joined the company in 1996 as a field management consultant for the Principal Advisor Network and was promoted to vice president in January 2004. In 2009, he assumed responsibility for all U.S. Insurance Solutions sales and distribution channels. Prior to joining The Principal, he worked for John Hancock Financial Services. Cecere earned his Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designation from The American College in 1997. He is a member of the Society of Financial Service Professionals (SFSP), National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) and GAMA International. In 2006, he was named to the board of trustees of The American College. He also is a committee member of LIMRA International's Distribution Leadership Round Table as well as a member of the GAMA executive board. A native of New York, Cecere earned his bachelor's degree from Utica College of Syracuse University.

Renee Schaaf

Ms. Renee Schaaf is Senior vice president and chief operating officer – Principal International of the company. She joined the company in 1980 as a management trainee. She held various management positions in the Group Insurance business and Retirement & Investor Services before being named vice president of Strategic Planning and Business Development for Principal International in 2011. An Iowa native, Schaaf earned her bachelor's degree from Iowa State University and her master's degree from Drake University.

Scott Mills

Mr. Scott M. Mills is Director of the Company. Mills has been in his current role with Viacom since 2012. Prior to that, he was president and chief operating officer of Viacom’s BET Networks unit, where he previously served as chief financial officer and president of Digital Media. He worked in investment banking and served as Deputy Treasurer for the City of Philadelphia before joining BET. A native of New York, Mills received his bachelor’s degree in economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Ms. Betsy J. Bernard is an Independent Director of Principal Financial Group Inc. Ms. Bernard was President of AT&T from October 2002 until December 2003 where she led more than 50,000 employees with AT&T Business, then a nearly $27 billion organization serving four million business customers. She was Chief Executive Officer of AT&T Consumer 2001-2002, which served about 40 million consumers and contributed $11.5 billion to AT&T's normalized revenue in 2002. She was head of the consumer and small business division as Executive Vice President — National Mass Markets at Qwest Communications from 2000-2001, and responsible for all retail markets at U S West as Executive Vice President — Retail from 1998 — 2000. She earned her bachelor's degree from St. Lawrence University, a master's degree in business administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and an MA from Stanford University in the Sloan Fellow Program.

Jocelyn Carter-Miller

Ms. Jocelyn E. Carter-Miller is an Independent Director of Principal Financial Group Inc. Ms. Carter-Miller has been President of TechEd Ventures since 2005, which specialized in the development and marketing of high performance educational and personal empowerment programming. She was Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Office Depot, Inc. from February 2002 until March 2004, with responsibility for the company's marketing for its 846 superstores, contract, catalog and e-commerce businesses in the United States and Canada and operations in 15 other countries. Before joining Office Depot, she was Corporate Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Motorola, Inc. with overall responsibility for marketing across its $30 billion revenue base and diverse businesses. She also had general management responsibility while at Motorola for network operations in Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Prior to joining Motorola, she was Vice President, Marketing and Product Development at Mattel, Inc. She earned her B.S. in Accounting at the University of Illinois and an MBA in Finance and Marketing at the University of Chicago.

Michael Dan

Mr. Michael T. Dan is an Independent Director of Principal Financial Group Inc. Mr. Dan was Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Brink's Company, a global provider of secure transportation and cash management services, from 1999 - 2011. The Brink's Company had 70,000 employees worldwide, operations in over 100 countries and $3.8 billion in revenue in 2011. Prior to joining Brink's, Mr. Dan served as president of Armored Vehicle Builder, Inc. He studied business and accounting at Morton College in Cicero, Illinois, and completed the advanced management program at Harvard Business School.

Dennis Ferro

Mr. Dennis H. Ferro is an Independent Director of Principal Financial Group Inc. Mr. Ferro served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Evergreen Investment Management Company, an asset management firm, from 2003 to 2008. Evergreen had assets under management of $175 billion on December 31, 2008, served more than four million individual and institutional investors through management of a broad range of investment products including institutional portfolios, mutual funds, variable annuities and other investments, and was led by 300 investment professionals. Mr. Ferro was the Chief Investment Officer of Evergreen from 1999 to 2003. From 1994-1999, he was Executive Vice President of Zurich Investment Management Ltd. and Head of International Equity Investments, and from 1991-1994 was Senior Managing Director of CIGNA International Investments. Prior to 1991, he held positions with Bankers Trust Company in Japan, as President and Managing Director, and in Florida and New York. Mr. Ferro is a member of the Investment Committee of the American Bankers Association. During 2009 - 2012, Mr. Ferro served as a corporate Director and Chairman of the Investment Committee of the New York Marine and General Insurance Company, a subsidiary of NYMAGIC, Inc. He earned a bachelor's degree from Villanova University and an MBA in finance from St. John's University. Mr. Ferro is a Chartered Financial Analyst ("CFA").

C. Daniel Gelatt

Dr. C. Daniel Gelatt, Ph.D., is an Independent Director of Principal Financial Group Inc. Dr. Gelatt has been President of NMT Corporation since 1987. NMT is an industry leader in mobile mapping and workforce automation software and has been providing analog and digital imaging services to clients worldwide for more than 40 years. He was an Assistant Professor in the Physics Department at Harvard University, where he earned his Ph.D., and was a research manager at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center before joining the Gelatt companies in 1982. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Wisconsin and his MA and Ph.D. at Harvard University.

Sandra Helton

Ms. Sandra L. Helton is an Independent Director of Principal Financial Group Inc. Ms. Helton was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer — Telephone and Data Systems, Inc. ("TDS"), a diversified telecommunications organization that includes United States Cellular Corporation, from 1998 through 2006. As of December 31, 2006, TDS served 7 million customers/units in 36 states with annual revenues of $4.5 billion. In her role, Ms. Helton had responsibility for the Finance, Information Technology, Strategic Planning, Corporate Communications, and Corporate Secretary functions. Prior to joining TDS, Ms. Helton spent 26 years with Corning Incorporated, where she held engineering, strategy and finance positions, including Senior Vice President and Treasurer from 1991 — 1997. She also served as Vice President and Corporate Controller of Compaq Computer Corporation from 1997-1998. Ms. Helton graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1971 with a B.S. degree in mathematics, summa cum laude, and earned an S.M. degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School in 1977 with double majors in Finance and Planning & Control.

Roger Hochschild

Mr. Roger C. Hochschild is Independent Director of Principal Financial Group, Inc. Mr. Hochschild has been the President and Chief Operating Officer of Discover Financial Services since 2004. He served as the Chief Administrative Officer, Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer of Morgan Stanley from 2001 to 2004. He served as Chief Marketing Officer of Discover Financial Services from 1998 to 2001. He served as a Senior Executive Vice President of MBNA America Bank from 1994 to 1998. He has been a Director of Student Loan Corporation since December 31, 2010.

Blair Pickerell

Mr. Blair C. Pickerell is an Independent Director of the Company. effective August 17, 2015. Pickerell has been in his current role with Nikko Asset Management since 2010. Prior to that, he was CEO, Asia, at Morgan Stanley Investment Management. Before that, he held positions at a number of asset and investment management organizations in Hong Kong. Pickerell earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in East Asian studies from Stanford University, and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.

Elizabeth Tallett

Ms. Elizabeth E. Tallett is Presiding Independent Director of Principal Financial Group Inc. Ms. Tallett has been a Principal of Hunter Partners, LLC, a management company for early to mid stage pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device companies, since July 2002. She has more than 30 years' experience in the biopharmaceutical and consumer industries. She received a bachelor's degree with honors in mathematics and economics from the University of Nottingham in England.
