Alabama Power Company, incorporated on November 10, 1927, is engaged in the generation, purchase, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity. The Company provides electricity and service to 1.4 million homes, businesses and industries. The Company and Georgia Power each own 50% of the outstanding common stock of Southern Electric Generating Company (SEGCO). SEGCO is an operating public utility company that owns electric generating units with an aggregate capacity of 1,019,680 kilowatts at Plant Gaston on the Coosa River near Wilsonville, Alabama. It acts as SEGCO's agent in the operation of SEGCO's units and furnishes fuel to SEGCO for its units. The Company and Georgia Power have various contracts covering a portion of their nuclear fuel needs for uranium, conversion services, enrichment services and fuel fabrication.
The Company provides electricity at retail in approximately 400 cities and towns, including Anniston, Birmingham, Gadsden, Mobile, Montgomery, and Tuscaloosa, as well as in rural areas, and at wholesale to 14 municipally-owned electric distribution systems, 11 of which are served indirectly through sales to Alabama Municipal Electric Authority, and two rural distributing cooperative associations. It owns coal reserves near its Plant Gorgas and uses the output of coal from the reserves in its generating plants. It also sells, and cooperates with dealers in promoting the sale of electric appliances. Its plants provide the Company's customers with clean electric energy. It also engages in land management programs. It owns or operates 81 electric generating units with total nameplate capacity of more than 13 million kilowatts. These generating units are located at 24 facilities. Its plants include Bankhead Hydroelectric Generating Plant, Bouldin Hydroelectric Generating Plant, Ernest C. Gaston Electric Generating Plant, Gadsden Electric Generating Plant, GE Plastics Cogen Facility, Greene County Electric Generating Plant, Harris Hydroelectric Generating Plant, Henry Hydroelectric Generating Plant, Holt Hydroelectric Generating Plant, James H. Miller, Jr. Electric Generating Plant, James M. Barry Electric Generating Plant, Jordan Hydroelectric Generating Plant, Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Electric Generating Plant, Lay Hydroelectric Generating Plant, Logan Martin Hydroelectric Generating Plant, Martin Hydroelectric Generating Plant, Mitchell Hydroelectric Generating Plant, Smith Hydroelectric Generating Plant, Theodore Cogen Facility, Thurlow Hydroelectric Generating Plant, Washington County Cogen Facility, Weiss Hydroelectric Generating Plant, William Crawford Gorgas Electric Generating Plant and Yates Hydroelectric Generating Plant.
