Associated British Foods plc (ABF) is a United Kingdom-based holding company. The Company is engaged in the processing and manufacture of food worldwide and textile retailing in the United Kingdom and continental Europe. The Company operates in five segments: grocery, sugar, agriculture, ingredients and retail. Grocery segment is engaged in the manufacture of grocery products, including hot beverages, sugar and sweeteners, vegetable oils, bread and baked goods, cereals, ethnic foods, herbs and spices, and meat products, which are sold to retail, wholesale and foodservice businesses. Sugar segment is engaged in the growing and processing of sugar beet and sugar cane for sale to industrial users and to Silver Spoon, which is included in the grocery segment. Agriculture segment is engaged in the manufacture of animal feeds and the provision of other products for the agriculture sector. Ingredients segment is engaged in the manufacture of bakers’ yeast, bakery ingredients, specialty proteins, enzymes, lipids and yeast extracts. Retail segment is engaged in the buying and merchandising value clothing and accessories through the Primark and Penneys retail chains. In July 2012, Premier Foods Plc sold its Elephant Atta ethnic flour business to Westmill Foods, a subsidiary of ABF.


The Company’s European operations typically produce around 1.6 million tons of beet Sugar and have the capacity to refine a further 400,000 tons of raw cane sugar. As of September 30, 2011, the Company operated 34 plants in 10 countries and has the capacity to produce five million tons of sugar and 600 million liters of ethanol, including potable alcohol. Its Spanish business, Azucarera, produces around 400,000 tons of beet sugar each year and has a cane refining capacity of a further 400,000 tons. It operates five cane sugar mills in Guangxi Province and seven beet sugar factories in the north east of the country. The Company has an annual sugar capacity of 850,000 tons. Illovo is Africa’s sugar producer with agricultural and production facilities in six countries. Illovo grows 6.1 million tons of sugar cane itself and its annual sugar production is 1.6 million tons.


AB Agri sells animal feed to farmers and purchases grain from the Company. It also provides sustainable supply chain solutions to food, drink and biofuel producers. It has facilities in the United Kingdom and China and markets products in over 40 countries worldwide.


Primark operates 232 stores with 7.82 million square feet of selling space in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Portugal. Primark prides itself on its loyal customer base. Targeted at the fashion-conscious under 35s, Primark offers customers merchandise at value for money prices. Primark’s range of departments includes womenswear, lingerie, childrenswear, menswear, footwear, accessories, hosiery and homeware.


Associated British Foods is an international manufacturer of branded grocery products. Twinings and Ovaltine comprise the Company’s global hot beverages business. The Company is engaged in UK sugar with Silver Spoon and Billington’s. Mazola is a producer of corn oil in the United States. In Mexico, Capullo is a premium canola oil.The Company produces Jordans cereals in the United Kingdom and bakery brands, Kingsmill, Ryvita, and Tip Top in the United Kingdom and Australia. World Foods comprises its authentic pan-Asian food brands, Patak’s and Blue Dragon. The Company is a United States producer of herbs and spices through the Tone’s, Spice Islands and Durkee brands. In Australia, the Company is a supplier of ham, bacon and smallgoods through the Don and KRC brands.


The Ingredients segment operates globally, supplying yeast and bakery ingredients plus speciality ingredients, through two organizations, AB Mauri and ABF Ingredients (ABFI). AB Mauri operates globally in yeast and bakery ingredient production with 49 plants in 25 countries supplying plant and artisanal bakers and the foodservice and wholesale channels. It is a technology in bread improvers, dough conditioners and bakery mixes. ABF Ingredients focuses on ingredients for food and non-food applications. It manufactures and markets emulsifiers, enzymes, esters, extruded ingredients, lactose, specialty lipids, specialty powders, specialty flours, yeast extracts, whey/milk protein isolates and concentrates.
