Ascena Retail Group, Inc. (Ascena), incorporated on July 27, 2010, is a national specialty retailer of apparel for women and teen girls operating, through its wholly owned subsidiaries, the Justice; Lane Bryant; maurices; dressbarn; and Catherines. As of July 28, 2013, the Company operated over 3,900 stores throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada. Ascena operates under five brands: dressbarn, maurices, Catherines, Lane Bryant and Justice. In October 2013, Ascena Retail Group Inc closed the sale of Fig's, food gift retailer, to Mason Companies, Inc.
The dressbarn segment consists of the specialty retail and e-commerce operations of the dressbarn brand. As of July 28, 2013, the dressbarn segment included approximately 826 specialty retail stores, as well as an e-commerce operation. The dressbarn brand primarily attracts female consumers in the mid-30’s to mid-50’s age range and offers career and casual fashion to the working woman.
The maurices segment consists of the specialty retail and e-commerce operations of the maurices brand. As of July 28, 2013, the maurices segment included approximately 877 specialty retail stores, and e-commerce operations. The maurices brand offers fashion designed to appeal to the 17 to 34 year-old female, with stores concentrated in small markets (approximately 25,000 to 100,000 people).
The Justice segment consists of the specialty retail, e-commerce and licensing operations of the Justice brand. As of July 28, 2012, the Justice segment included approximately 971 specialty retail stores, e-commerce operations, and certain licensed franchises in international territories. The Justice brand offers apparel to girls who are ages 7 to 14.
As of July 28, 2013, the Lane Bryant segment includes 788 specialty retail and outlet stores, and e-commerce operations. Lane Bryant generally ranging in age from 35 to 55 years old, which shops for fashionable merchandise in the moderate price range. Lane Bryant retail stores are located in a combination of destination malls, lifestyle centers and strip shopping centers.
As of July 28, 2013, the Catherines segment includes approximately 397 specialty retail stores, and e-commerce operations. Catherines carries a range of plus sizes (16-34 and 0X-5X) and is particularly known for extended sizes (28-34). Catherines offers classic apparel and accessories to female customers for wear-to-work and casual lifestyles. Catherines customers are generally in the 45 years old and older age group, shop in the moderate price range. Catherines retail stores are primarily located in strip shopping centers and outlet locations.
The Company competes with Walmart, Macy’s, JCPenney, Kohl’s, Old Navy, Aeropostale and Target.
