Biolase Technology, Inc., incorporated in 1987, is a medical technology company that develops, manufactures and markets lasers, related products and services focused on technologies for applications and procedures in dentistry and medicine. The Company’s Waterlase Dentistry solution is a group of products, including dental laser systems that allow dentists, periodontists, endodontists, oral surgeons and other specialists to perform a range of dental procedures, including cosmetic and complex surgical applications. Its systems are designed to provide many types of dental procedures. The Waterlase Dentistry solution offers two categories of laser system products: its Waterlase family of products and its Diode family of products, which includes the Company’s ezlase system, as well as related consumables, training and services. Biolase Technology, Inc. has clearance from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market its laser systems in the United States and also has the approvals to sell its laser systems in Canada, the European Union and certain other international markets.
Waterlase systems
The Company’s Waterlase systems use a combination of water and laser to perform most dental procedures. It refers to its interaction of water and laser as YSGG Laser HydroPhotonics. The Waterlase MD has a range of clinical capabilities both in dentistry and other medical disciplines. In July 2008, the Company’s Waterlase C100 All-Tissue Dental Laser System was introduced into the market. In February 2009, it introduced the Waterlase MD Turbo All-Tissue Dental Laser System, an upgrade to the original Waterlase MD.
The Company’s Waterlase systems consist of the Waterlase MD and Waterlase C100 All-Tissue Dental Laser systems. Each of these systems is designed around its YSGG Laser HydroPhotonics technology. YSGG is a shortened abbreviation referring to the crystal (Er, Cr: YSGG) laser used in the Waterlase system, which contains the elements erbium, chromium and yttrium, scandium, gallium and garnet. This crystal laser produces energy with specific absorption and tissue interaction characteristics for dental applications. HydroPhotonics refers to the interaction of laser with water to produce energy to cut tissue. Through YSGG Laser HydroPhotonics, the Waterlase systems is minimally invasive and can cut hard tissue, such as bone and teeth, and soft tissue, such as gums.
Diode systems
The Company’s Diode laser system consists of the ezlase, a semiconductor diode laser to perform soft tissue, hygiene and cosmetic procedures, including teeth whitening. Its ezlase system serves markets of general, cosmetic, orthodontic, and hygiene procedures. The ezlase system features a pulse mode, ComfortPulse, which allows the tissue to cool between pulses resulting in patient comfort and reduced need for anesthesia for many common procedures. Other features include wireless foot pedal control, disposable single-use tips, color touch screen activation with up to 15 procedure-based pre-sets, whitening hand piece, rechargeable battery pack and wall mount . The Company has received FDA clearance for tooth whitening using the ezlase system during the year ended December 31, 2008.
The Company competes with Hoya ConBio, OpusDent Ltd., Ivoclar Vivadent AG, Fotona d.d., Lares, Syneron, KaVo and Deka Dental Corporation.
