CPFL Energia S.A., incorporated on March 20, 1998, is a holding company. The Company, through its subsidiaries, distributes, generates, transmits and commercializes electricity in Brazil, as well as provides energy-related services. The Company's segments include Distribution, Conventional Generation Sources, Renewable Generation Sources, Commercialization, Services and Other. The Company distributes over 40,160 Gigawatt Hour (GWh) of electricity to approximately 7.8 million consumers in Brazil. Through its interest in CPFL Energias Renovaveis S.A. (CPFL Renovaveis), the Company is also involved in the building of Small Hydroelectric Power Plants (SHPPs) and wind farms. The Company is also engaged in power commercialization, buying and selling electricity to power producers, Free Consumers and power trading companies. It also provides agency services to Free Consumers before the Camara de Comercializacao de Energia Eletrica (CCEE) and other agents, as well as electricity related services.
The Company's over eight distribution subsidiaries together supply electricity to a region covering approximately 204,060 square kilometers, primarily in the states of Sao Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul. Its subsidiaries operate distribution lines with voltage levels ranging from 11.9 Kilovolts to 138 Kilovolts. Its concession areas include over 561 municipalities and a population of approximately 20 million people. Its distribution subsidiaries include Companhia Paulista de Forca e Luz (CPFL Paulista), Companhia Piratininga de Forca e Luz (CPFL Piratininga), Rio Grande Energia S.A. (RGE), Companhia Luz e Forca Santa Cruz (CPFL Santa Cruz), Companhia Jaguari de Energia (CPFL Jaguari), Companhia Luz e Forca de Mococa (CPFL Mococa), Companhia Leste Paulista de Energia (CPFL Leste Paulista) and Companhia Sul Paulista de Energia (CPFL Sul Paulista). Its distribution networks consist of over 247,420 kilometers of distribution lines, including 369,530 distribution transformers.
Conventional Generation Sources
The Company's Conventional Generation Sources segment consists in substantial part of Hydroelectric Power Plants. The conventional generation subsidiaries have installed capacity of over 2,235 megawatts (MW). The Company generates a total of over 11,370 Gigawatt Hour (GWh) of electricity, and it has approximately 10,050 Gigawatt Hour (GWh) of Assured Energy. The Company holds equity interests in over eight Hydroelectric Power Plants, such as Serra da Mesa, Monte Claro, Barra Grande, Campos Novos, Luiz Eduardo Magalhaes Lajeado, Castro Alves, 14 de Julho and Foz do Chapeco.
Renewable Generation Sources
The Company's Renewable Generation Sources segment consists of wind farms, Biomass Thermoelectric Power Plants, Small Hydroelectric Power Plants and a solar power plant. The Company's subsidiary, CPFL Renovaveis, in which it owns interest through CPFL Geracao de Energia S.A. (CPFL Geracao), concentrates its activities in energy generation through renewable sources. CPFL Renovaveis operates all of its wind farms and Thermoelectric Biomass Power Plants, as well as over 40 of its 50 Small Hydroelectric Power Plants. CPFL Renovaveis has over 45 wind farms. CPFL Renovaveis also operates the Tanquinho Solar Power Plant, which is located in the state of Sao Paulo and has an Installed Capacity of approximately 1.1 megawatts peak (MWP). Its total consolidated installed capacity through its Renewable Generation segment is over 930 megawatts peak (MWP).
The Company's Commercialization segment sells electricity to Free Consumers and other concessionaires or licensees. Its commercialization subsidiaries handle its commercialization operations and provide agency services to Free Consumers before the CCEE and other agents, including guidance on their operational requirements. CPFL Brasil, its commercialization subsidiary, procures and sells electricity to Free Consumers, other commercialization and generation companies and distribution facilities. The Company sells over 9,870 Gigawatt Hour (GWh) of electricity, of which approximately 9,380 GWh is sold to unaffiliated third parties.
The Company's Services segment offers its consumers a range of electricity related services. Its activities in this segment include providing electricity related services, such as project design and construction, to its affiliates and unaffiliated parties.
The Company's Other segment includes the activities of over two transmission assets held through CPFL Geracao, of which one (CPFL Piracicaba) is operational and the other (CPFL Morro Agudo) is under construction. It also includes the activities of CPFL Telecom, and its holding company expenses other than the amortization of intangible assets related to its concessions.
