DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. (DreamWorks Animation), incorporated on June 13, 2004, is engaged in the development, production and exploitation of animated films and their associated characters in the worldwide theatrical, home entertainment, television, merchandising and licensing and other markets. DreamWorks Animation creates family entertainment, including animated feature films, television specials and series, live entertainment properties and related consumer products, meant for audiences around the world. As of December 31, 2012, it had released a total of 25 animated feature films. The Company’s films are distributed in theatrical, home entertainment and television markets on a worldwide basis by Paramount Pictures Corporation, a subsidiary of Viacom Inc. (Viacom), and its affiliates (collectively, Paramount). On August 29, 2012, it completed the acquisition of Classic Media (which now operates as DreamWorks Classics). Classic Media is primarily engaged in the acquisition and exploitation of character-based family entertainment properties across television, home entertainment, merchandising, music and other media channels worldwide. Classic Media has acquired, licensed or created intellectual property rights in relation to a number of characters including Veggie Tales, Casper, Lassie, Barbie, Postman Pat, Tinga Tinga Tales, Frosty and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
The Company conducts its business primarily in two studios: in Glendale, California and in Redwood City, California. The Company is producing an animated television series based on How to Train Your Dragon, for broadcast on the Cartoon Network. The Company has also produced half-hour television specials based on its films Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar and Monsters vs. Aliens. It also operated a national touring production of the play.The Company derives revenue from its distributors’ worldwide exploitation of the feature films in theaters and in ancillary markets, such as home entertainment, and pay and free broadcast television. In addition, the Company earns revenue from the licensing and merchandising of the films and characters in markets around the world.
