FuelCell Energy, Inc., incorporated on July 12, 1999, is an integrated fuel cell company. The Company designs, manufactures, sells, installs, operates and services stationary fuel cell power plants for distributed power generation. The Company's segment is fuel cell power plant production and research. The Company's power plants provide on-site power and utility grid support. The Company's plants operate in approximately 50 locations on approximately three continents and generate approximately four billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity.
The Company provides power generation solutions to its customers, including power plant installations, as well as power plant operation and maintenance under service agreements. The Company develops projects and sells fuel cell equipment direct to the end user of the power and utilities. The Company's customer base includes utility companies, municipalities, universities, government entities and a range of industrial and commercial enterprises. The Company offers services in South Korea and the United States. The Company's fuel cell products, Direct FuelCell (DFC) power plants offer power generation for customers, including approximately 2.8 megawatts DFC3000, approximately 1.4 megawatts DFC1500 and approximately 300 kilowatts DFC300 plus derivations of the DFC product for specific applications. The Company offers project development; engineering procurement and construction (EPC) services operations and maintenance, and project finance.
The Company's DFC technology generates electricity directly from a fuel, such as natural gas or renewable biogas, by reforming the fuel inside the fuel cell to produce hydrogen. The Company's High Efficiency Fuel Cell (HEFC) system is configured with a series of approximately three fuel cell modules that operate in sequence. Its Direct FuelCell Energy Recovery Generation (DFC-ERG) power plants are used in natural gas pipeline applications. The DFC carbon capture system separates carbon dioxide from the flue gases of natural gas or coal-fired power plants or industrial facilities. The DFC fuel cells internally reform the fuel source to obtain hydrogen. Fuel cells are devices that directly convert chemical energy (fuel) into electricity, heat and water. The Company operates a manufacturing facility in Torrington, Connecticut where it produces the DFC cell packages and assembles the fuel cell modules.
The Company competes with Ballard Power Systems, Inc., Plug Power, Toyota, Hyundai, Honda, GM, Doosan Fuel Cells America, LG, Rolls Royce, General Electric, Bloom Energy, Parker Hannifin, Toyota/Kyocera, Ceramic Fuel Cells Ltd., Fuji Electric, Panasonic, AFC Energy, Intelligent Energy Holdings, Caterpillar Solar Turbines, Cummins, Wartsilla, MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Detroit Diesel and Kawasaki.
