National Grid Plc, incorporated on July 11, 2000, is an electricity and gas utility company. The Company operates in three segments: UK Transmission, UK Gas Distribution and US Regulated. UK Transmission includes high voltage electricity transmission networks, the gas transmission network in Great Britain, UK liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage activities and the French electricity interconnector. Its UK Gas Distribution includes four of the eight regional networks of Great Britain’s gas distribution system. US Regulated includes gas distribution networks, electricity distribution networks and high voltage electricity transmission networks in New York and New England and electricity generation facilities in New York and Massachusetts. Other activities primarily relate to non-regulated businesses and other commercial operations, including United Kingdom based gas and electricity metering activities; UK property management; a UK LNG import terminal; other LNG operations; US unregulated transmission pipelines, together with corporate activities.
The Company owns the electricity transmission system in England and Wales. Its networks comprise approximately 7,200 kilometers (4,470 miles) of overhead line, 1,400 kilometers (870 miles) of underground cable and 329 substations. It is also the national electricity transmission system operator, responsible for both the England and Wales transmission system. The Company’s network comprises approximately 7,660 kilometers (4,760 miles) of high pressure pipe and 23 compressor stations.
UK Gas Distribution
The Company’s networks comprise approximately 131,000 kilometers (82,000 miles) of gas distribution pipeline and we transport gas from the gas national transmission system to around 10.9 million consumers on behalf of 26 gas shippers. Gas consumption in the Company’s United Kingdom networks was 306 terawatt hours during the fiscal year ended March 31, 2013 (fiscal 2013). The Company manages the national gas emergency number (0800 111 999). This service, along with the enquiries lines, appliance repair helpline and meter enquiry service, handled 2,480,669 calls during fiscal 2013.
The Company, through its networks we serve approximately 3.4 million electricity consumers in New England and upstate New York. It also own and operate 50 electricity generation units on Long Island that together provide 3.8 gigawatts of power under contract to LIPA. Its plants consist of oil and gas fired steam turbine, gas turbine and diesel driven generating units ranging from 2 megawatts to 385 megawatts. Its US gas distribution networks provide services to around 3.5 million consumers across the northeastern United States, located in service territories in upstate New York, New York City, Long Island, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
