Rockwell Automation, Inc. (Rockwell Automation), incorporated in 1996, is a global provider of industrial automation power, control and information solutions. The Company operates in two business segments: Architecture & Software, and Control Products & Solutions. During the fiscal year ended September 30, 2009 (fiscal 2009), the Company completed the acquisition of Xi’an Hengsheng Science & Technology Company Limited (Hengsheng). In May 2008, Rockwell Automation completed the acquisition of CEDES Safety & Automation AG (CEDES). In May 2008, the Company completed the acquisition of Incuity Software, Inc. (Incuity). In March 2009, Rutter Inc. closed the sale of its controls and automation business to the Rockwell Automation Group of Companies.

Architecture & Software

The Architecture & Software segment contains all the elements of the integrated control and information architecture for controlling the customer’s plant floor and connecting with their manufacturing enterprise. The segment has a portfolio of products, including control platforms, software products, and other architecture and software products. Architecture & Software’s products are marketed under the Allen-Bradley, A-B, Rockwell Software and FactoryTalk brand names.

Control platforms perform multiple control disciplines and monitoring of applications, including discrete, batch, continuous process, drives control, motion control and machine safety control. The platform products include controllers, electronic operator interface devices, electronic input/output devices, communication and networking products, industrial computers and condition-based monitoring systems. The information-enabled Logix controllers provide integrated multi-discipline control that is modular and scaleable.

Software products include configuration and visualization software used to operate and supervise control platforms, advanced process control software and manufacturing execution software (MES) that addresses information needs between the factory floor and a customer’s enterprise business system. The other Architecture & Software products include rotary and linear motion control products, sensors and machine safety components.

The segment competes with Siemens AG, Mitsubishi Corp., ABB Ltd, Honeywell International Inc., Schneider Electric SA and Emerson Electric Co.

Control Products & Solutions

The Control Products & Solutions segment combines a portfolio of intelligent motor control and industrial control products with the customer support and application knowledge necessary to implement an automation or information solution on the plant floor. The products are marketed under the Allen Bradley, A-B and ICS Triplex brand names.

The product portfolio includes low voltage and medium voltage electro-mechanical and electronic motor starters, motor and circuit protection devices, alternating current/direct current (AC/DC) variable frequency drives, contactors, push buttons, signaling devices, termination and protection devices, relays and timers and condition sensors. It includes packaging solutions, including configured drives, motor control centers and custom-engineered panels for original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and end-user applications.

The segment includes automation and information solutions, including custom-engineered hardware and software systems for discrete, process, motion, safety, drives and manufacturing information applications. The services provided includes multi-vendor customer technical support and repair, asset management, training and predictive and preventative maintenance.
