RPX Corporation (RPX), incorporated in July 2008, provides patent risk management solutions, offering defensive buying, acquisition syndication, patent intelligence and advisory services. The Company provides a subscription-based patent risk management solution that facilitates exchanges of value between owners and users of patents. As of December 31, 2010, it had a client network of 70 members. By acquiring problem patents, RPX helps to mitigate and manage the risk of potential patent assertions for its client network. The core of the Company’s solution is defensive patent aggregation, in which it acquires patents or licenses to patents, which it refers to collectively as patent assets that are being or may be asserted against its current and prospective clients. The Company then license these patent assets to its clients to protect them from potential patent infringement assertions. RPX also provides its clients access to its patent market intelligence and data. In Jnauary 2013, the Company acquired sub-license rights to patents related to Web-based application delivery from Droplets, Inc. In January 2014, Rpx Corp completed a licensing transaction with Boston University to acquire sub-license rights to patents used in optoelectronic devices such as blue LEDs and laser diodes. In June 2014, RPX Corp acquired PatentFreedom, provider of data, intelligence, and consulting on non-practicing entities.
The Company’s business model aligns its interests with those of its clients. Its clients include companies that make or sell technology based products and services, as well as companies that use technology in their businesses. RPX refers to these companies as operating companies. Its client network consists of companies of all sizes, including companies, such as Cisco Systems, Inc., Google Inc., Nokia Corporation, Panasonic Corporation, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., SAP AG, Sharp Corporation, Sony Corporation and Verizon Communications Inc.
