Sony Corporation (Sony), incorporated on May 7, 1946, is engaged in the development, design, manufacture, and sale of various kinds of electronic equipment, instruments, and devices for consumer, professional and industrial markets, as well as game consoles and software. The Company's manufacturing facilities are located in Asia, including Japan. Sony also utilizes third-party contract manufacturers for certain products. Sony is also engaged in the development, production, manufacture, and distribution of recorded music and the management and licensing of the words and music of songs. It is also engaged in various financial services businesses, including life and non-life insurance operations through its Japanese insurance subsidiaries and banking operations through a Japanese Internet-based banking subsidiary. In addition, Sony is engaged in a network services business and an advertising agency business in Japan.
Sony Marketing (Japan) Inc. markets consumer electronics products through retailers. Sony Business Solutions Corporation markets professional electronics products and services. For electronic components, Sony sells products directly to wholesalers and manufacturers. Sony markets its electronics products and services through Sony Electronics Inc. and other wholly owned subsidiaries in the United States. In Europe, Sony's electronics products and services are marketed through sales subsidiaries, including Sony Europe Limited, which is headquartered in the United Kingdom and has branches in European countries, and CJSC Sony Electronics in Russia. Sony markets its electronics products and services through Sony (China) Limited, Sony Corporation of Hong Kong Limited and other wholly owned subsidiaries in China. In Asia-Pacific, Sony's electronics products and services are marketed through sales subsidiaries, including Sony India Private Limited, Sony Electronics of Korea Corporation, Sony Taiwan Limited and Sony Electronics Vietnam. In overseas areas other than the United States, Europe, China and Asia-Pacific, Sony's electronics products and services are marketed through sales subsidiaries, including Sony Brasil Ltda., Sony Middle East & Africa FZE in the United Arab Emirates, Sony of Canada Limited and Sony de Mexico S.A.de C.V.
SPE uses its own distribution service businesses Within the United States. Outside the United States, SPE distributes and markets motion pictures through one of its Sony Pictures Releasing International subsidiaries. The worldwide home entertainment distribution of SPE's motion pictures and television programming (and programming acquired or licensed from others) is handled through Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, except in certain countries where SPE has joint distribution or sub-distribution arrangements with other studios, or arrangements with independent local distributors. Its product is distributed in various home media formats including digital versatile disc (DVD), Blu-ray disc, electronic sell-through and video-on-demand. The worldwide television distribution of SPE's motion pictures and television programming (and programming acquired or licensed from others) is handled through Sony Pictures Television. Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc.'s (SPE's) library of motion pictures and television programming is licensed to broadcast television networks, pay and basic cable networks, direct broadcast satellite providers, as well as to subscription and advertising supported Internet television providers (such as Sony's PlayStation Network and Netflix). SPE's television networks are distributed to multiple distribution platforms such as cable, satellite, Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) systems, and mobile operators for delivery to viewers around the world.
Sony Music Entertainment (SME) and Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc. (SMEJ) develop, produce, market and distribute recorded music in various commercial formats. SME and its affiliates conduct business globally under Columbia Records, Epic Records, RCA Records and other labels. SMEJ conducts business in Japan under Sony Music Records, Epic Records Japan, SME Records, Ki/oon Music, Sony Music Associated Records and other labels. Sony owns and acquires rights to musical compositions, exploits and markets these compositions, receives royalties or fees for their use and conducts its music publishing business through a joint venture with a third-party investor in countries other than Japan under the Sony/ATV name. SMEJ creates artwork and produces packaged home entertainment products, including music/games, and organizes various events in Japan through Sony Music Communications Inc. SMEJ also produces, markets, and distributes animation products through Aniplex Inc.
Sony Life conducts its life insurance business in Japan. Sony Life's business is providing death protection and other insurance products to individuals. Sony Life provides tailor-made life insurance products that are optimized for each customer. Sony Life maintains a service network, which consists of the Lifeplanner channel and the independent agent channel in Japan. Sony Life also has representative offices in Beijing and Taipei, which are for the purpose of researching the financial and life insurance market in China and Taiwan, respectively. Sony DADC Corporation (Sony DADC) offers Blu-ray disc, DVD and CD media replication services, as well as digital and physical supply chain solutions to business customers in the entertainment, education, and information industries. So-net provides Internet broadband network services to subscribers, as well as creates and distributes content through its portal services to various electronics product platforms (personal computers (PCs) and mobile phones).
Sony Mobile undertakes product research, development, design, marketing, sales, production, distribution and customer services. The Company offers its services for mobile phones, tablets, accessories and applications.
Game & Network Services
The Company, through Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI), develops, produces, markets and distributes PlayStation4 (PS4), PlayStation3 (PS3), PlayStationVita (PS Vita) and PSP (PlayStationPortable) (PSP) hardware and related package software. Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC (SCEA) and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Ltd. (SCEE) markets and distributes PS4, PS3, PS Vita, and PSP hardware, and develops, produces, markets and distributes related package software locally in the United States and Europe. Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI), Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC (SCEA) and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Ltd. (SCEE) enter into licenses with third-party software developers and publishers. In network services, Sony Network Entertainment Inc. (SNEI) markets and distributes game software and network services internationally through PlayStation Network (PSN).
Imaging Products & Solutions
The Company's Imaging Products & Solutions segment includes digital imaging products and professional solutions. Its digital imaging products include compact digital cameras, interchangeable single-lens cameras and video cameras. Sony's professional solutions include broadcast and professional use products.
Home Entertainment & Sound
The Company's Home Entertainment & Sound segment includes televisions, and audio and video. Its televisions include Liquid crystal display (LCD) televisions. Its audio and video includes Blu-ray Disc players and recorders, home audio, headphones and memory-based portable audio devices.
The Company's Devices segment includes semiconductors and components. Its semiconductor products include complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensors, charge-coupled devices (CCDs), system LSIs and other semiconductors. Its components include batteries, audio/video/data recording media, storage media, optical pickups, and chemical products. It also offers chemical products, which include materials and components for electronic devices, such as anisotropic conductive films.
The Company's Pictures segment includes motion pictures, television productions and media networks. Its motion pictures includes the production, acquisition and distribution of live-action and animated motion pictures and direct-to-video content. SPE's motion picture production organizations include Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems, Sony Pictures Animation, Sony Pictures Classics and TriStar Pictures. SPE also operates Sony Pictures Imageworks, which is a visual effects and animation unit, and manages a studio facility, Sony Pictures Studios, which includes post production facilities. Sony's television productions includes the production, acquisition and distribution of television programming, including scripted series, unscripted reality or light entertainment, daytime serials, game shows, animated series, made for television movies and miniseries and other programming. Outside the United States, SPE produces local language programming and licenses SPE owned programming and formats around the world. The Company's media networks include the operation of television and digital networks across the world. SPE's television networks include Multi Screen Media Private Limited (MSM), which operates television networks in India and around the world, and a controlling interest in Game Show Network (GSN), which operates a United States based cable network and an online game business. Digital networks include Crackle, which is a multi-platform video entertainment network focusing on premium video content.
The Company's Music segment includes recorded music, music publishing, and visual media and platform. Sony's recorded music includes the distribution of physical and digital recorded music and revenue derived from artists' live performance. SME, which is a global entertainment company, is engaged in the development, production, marketing and distribution of recorded music in various commercial formats and genres. SMEJ is an entertainment company focused on the Japanese market, which includes a Japanese domestic recorded music business that produces recorded music and music videos through contacts with artists in various music genres. Its music publishing includes the management and licensing of the words and music of songs. Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC (Sony/ATV) is a United States-based music publishing business that owns and acquires rights to musical compositions, exploiting and marketing these compositions and receiving royalties or fees for their use. Sony's visual media and platform includes various service offerings for music and visual products and the production and distribution of animation titles. This business is operated by SMEJ.
In the Financial Services segment, Sony established a wholly owned subsidiary, SFH, which is a holding company for Sony Life, Sony Assurance and Sony Bank., which integrates various financial services, including insurance and savings and loans, and offers individual customers value-added products and services. SFH conducts insurance and banking operations through Sony Life, which is a Japanese life insurance company; Sony Assurance, a Japanese non-life insurance company, and Sony Bank, which is a Japanese Internet-based bank, which are all wholly owned by SFH.
The Company's All Other segment consists of various operating activities, including personal computers, a Blu-ray disc, digital versatile disc (DVD) and Compact disc (CD) manufacturing business. It also includes So-net, which is a subsidiary operating an Internet service provider business in Japan.
