USA Truck, Inc., incorporated in September 1986, is a truckload carrier providing transportation of general commodities throughout the continental United States, into and out of Mexico and into and out of portions of Canada. The Company operates in three segments: Trucking operating segment, Strategic Capacity Solutions (SCS) operating segment and rail Intermodal operating segment. The Company's Trucking operating segment consists primarily of its general freight and freight service offerings. The Company’s SCS operating segment consisting entirely of its freight brokerage service offering and its rail Intermodal operating segment. The Company transports dry van trailer loads of freight from origin to destination without intermediate stops or handling. To complement the Company's General Freight operations, the Company provides, brokerage and rails intermodal services. For shipments into Mexico, the Company transfers its trailers to tractors operated by Mexican carriers at a facility in Laredo, Texas, which is operated by its wholly-owned subsidiary. Through the Company's asset based and non-asset based capabilities, the Company transports many types of freight for a diverse customer base in industries, such as industrial machinery and equipment, rubber and plastics, retail stores, paper products, durable consumer goods, metals, electronics and chemicals.
The Trucking operating segment, in its truckload freight services utilize equipment that the Company owned or equipment owned by independent contractors for the pick-up and delivery of freight. Its General Freight service offering transports freight over irregular routes as a short- to medium-haul common carrier. Its Dedicated freight service offering provides similar transportation services. As of December 31, 2011, its Trucking fleet consisted of 2,257 in-service tractors and 6,239 in-service trailers and its average length-of-haul was 532 miles.
The Company’s SCS operating segment consists of its freight brokerage service offering, which matches customer shipments with available equipment of authorized carriers and provides services that complement its Trucking operations. The Company provides these services primarily to its existing trucking customers, many of whom prefer to rely on a single carrier, or a small group of carriers, to provide all of their transportation needs. As of December 31, 2011, a majority of the customers of SCS had also engaged the Company to provide services through one or more of its Trucking service offerings. The Company’s Intermodal operating segments provides services, which complement the Company’s trucking services, primarily to existing customers of its Trucking operating segment.
