Weis Markets, Inc., incorporated in 1924, is principally engaged in the retail sale of food in Pennsylvania and surrounding states. The Company's retail food stores sell groceries, dairy products, frozen foods, meats, seafood, fresh produce, floral, prescriptions, deli/bakery products, prepared foods, fuel and general merchandise items, such as health and beauty care and household products. In addition, services, such as third parties providing in-store banks, laundry services and take-out restaurants are offered at certain locations. During the fiscal year ended December 27, 2008 (fiscal 2008), groceries accounted for 54.10% % of net sales, meats, 16.08%, produce, 14.68%, pharmacy, 9.13%, pet supplies, 2.05%, and the Company's other division accounted for 3.96% of its net sales.

During fiscal 2008, the Company owned and operated 154 retail food stores and a chain of 27 SuperPetz, LLC pet supply stores. It has 125 total retail food stores in Pennsylvania consisting of 98 Weis Markets, 13 Mr. Z’s Food Mart, five Kings’ Supermarkets, one Cressler’s Marketplace, three Scot’s Lo-Cost and one Save-a-Lot. It has 24 Weis Markets in Maryland; three in New Jersey; one in New York, and two in West Virginia. SuperPetz, LLC operated two stores in Alabama, one in Georgia, one in Indiana, one in Maryland, one in Michigan, one in North Carolina, five stores in Ohio, 10 stores in Pennsylvania, five in South Carolina and two stores in Tennessee. All trade names, except Scot's Lo-Cost and Save-A-Lot, operate as conventional supermarkets. Scot's Lo-Cost operates under a warehouse format, while Save-A-Lot's format caters to the price-motivated consumer. The retail food stores range in size from 8,000 to 67,000 square feet, with an average size of approximately 48,000 square feet.

The Company supports the retail operations through a centrally located distribution facility, its own transportation fleet and four manufacturing facilities. These manufacturing facilities consist of a meat processing plant, an ice cream plant, an ice plant and a milk processing plant. The Company advertises through various media, including circulars, newspapers, radio and television. It uses a loyalty card program, Weis Club Preferred Shopper, which provides shoppers with an opportunity to receive discounts, promotions and rewards.
