Advanced Life Sciences Holdings, Inc., incorporated in January 1999, is a biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery, development and commercialization of drugs in the areas of infectious disease, oncology and respiratory disease. Advanced Life Sciences Holdings, Inc. has a worldwide license (excluding Japan) from Abbott Laboratories (Abbott) to develop and commercialize cethromycin, once-a-day antibiotic for the treatment of respiratory tract infections. On September 30, 2008, the Company submitted a new drug application (NDA) for the use of cethromycin in community acquired pneumonia (CAP). Along with its clinical work in the treatment of mild-to-moderate CAP, the Company is collaborating with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease and the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases to evaluate cethromycin’s potential in preventing inhalation anthrax and other high-priority bioterror agents.
ALS-357 is a compound that has shown evidence of anti-tumor activity against malignant melanoma in preclinical studies. It has established an open investigational new drug application (IND) for ALS-357 with the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and has developed the protocol for a Phase I/II escalating dose study for the topical treatment of cutaneous melanoma.
ALS-886 is a therapeutic in preclinical development for the treatment of inflammation-related tissue damage, including tissue damage associated with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Patients suffering from ARDS have a high fatality rate. The Company has established an IND application for ALS-886 with the FDA. In July 2008, the Company began collaboration with the United Kingdom’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) to evaluate ALS-886 as a treatment for chemically induced lung injury.
Advanced Life Sciences Holdings, Inc. has additional product candidates in preclinical development coming from its natural products-based chemistry platform. It has not received FDA approval for any of its product candidates.
