The AES Corporation, incorporated on January 28, 1981, is a holding company. The Company, through its subsidiaries and affiliates, operates a diversified portfolio of electricity generation and distribution businesses. The Company is organized into six strategic business units (SBUs): the United States; Andes; Brazil; Mexico, Central America and Caribbean (MCAC); Europe, and Asia. Within these SBUs, the Company has two lines of business: generation and utilities. Its United States SBU has over 20 generation facilities and approximately two integrated utilities in the United States. Its Andes SBU has generation facilities in over three countries: Chile, Colombia and Argentina. Its Brazil SBU has generation and distribution businesses: Eletropaulo and Tiete. Its MCAC SBU has a portfolio of distribution businesses and generation facilities, including renewable energy, in over five countries, with a total capacity of approximately 3,240 megawatt (MW) and distribution networks. Its Europe SBU has generation facilities in over five countries and its Asia SBU has generation facilities in over four countries.
Under the generation business line, the Company owns and operates power plants to generate and sell power to customers, such as utilities, industrial users and other intermediaries. It owns and operates a generation portfolio of approximately 29,350 MW, excluding the generation capabilities of its integrated utilities. Its generation businesses sell electricity under medium- or long-term contracts or under short-term agreements. The Company owns and operates approximately 8,140 MW (approximately 4,360 proportional MW) of renewable generation, including hydro, wind, energy storage, biomass and landfill gas.
Under the Utilities business line, the Company sells electricity directly to end users, such as homes and businesses. The Company owns and operates utilities to generate or purchase, distribute, transmit and sell electricity to end user customers in the residential, commercial, industrial and governmental sectors within a defined service area. In addition, the utilities business also generates and sells electricity on the wholesale market. Its approximately two utilities in the United States include generation capacity totaling approximately 6,520 MW.
