Alaska Communications Systems Group, Inc. (ACS), incorporated on October 13, 1998, provides integrated communications services to consumer and business customers in and out of Alaska. The Company’s communications network extends throughout Alaska and connects to the contiguous states through its two undersea fiber optic cable systems: the AKORN system and the Northstar system. Its communications network, which includes wireless spectrum holdings covering Alaska, is among the expansive in Alaska and forms the foundation of service to its customers. The Company offers many products and services over this network, and the Company offers many channels for service delivery to its customers through a value proposition differentiated by service and network design. The Company provides broadband, Internet access, local and long distance voice, and other communications products and services to residential customers. In 2012, the Company launched its Home Internet product.
The Company provides wireless voice and broadband services, and other value-added wireless products and services, such as wireless devices, across Alaska with roaming coverage available in the contiguous states, Hawaii and Canada. It provides voice and broadband termination services to inter and intrastate carriers who provide services to its retail customers. The Company operates its business under a single reportable segment, and provides services and products to categories including business and wholesale, consumer, and access and CETC. The Company’s products or services include Internet services, data network services, voice communications and wireless services, pro services and hosted services. The Company provides communications and managed services including voice and broadband data network hosting, IT management, cloud-based services, billing and collection, and local and long distance services to business customers.
The Company’s business customers include small and medium businesses, larger enterprises, and government customers which include municipal, local, state and federal government entities, school districts, libraries and rural health care hospitals. Its wholesale customers are other telecommunications carriers, including its primary competitor, General Communications, Inc (GCI), who rely on the Company to provide connectivity for voice, long distance and broadband needs (including wireless backhaul services), to access their customers over its network. Backhaul services consist of providing other wireless carriers with access to their cell site locations.
The Company competes with General Communications, Inc, AT&T and Matanuska Telephone Association, Inc.
