Appliance Recycling Centers of America, Inc. (ARCA), incorporated in 1983, is engaged in the business of selling new major household appliances through a chain of Company-owned stores under the name ApplianceSmart. It also provides turnkey appliance recycling and replacement services for electric utilities and other sponsors of energy efficiency programs. ARCA operates in two segments: retail and recycling. The retail segment is consists of sales generated through its ApplianceSmart stores. The Company’s recycling segment includes all fees charged for collecting, recycling and installing appliances for utilities and other customers and includes by-product revenue, which is generated primarily through the recycling of appliances.
In addition, the Company has a 50% interest in a joint venture, ARCA Advanced Processing, LLC (AAP), which recycles appliances generated from twelve states in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States for General Electric Company (GE) acting through its GE Appliances business component. As of March 2012, ApplianceSmart was operating 20 stores: six in the Minneapolis/St. Paul market; one in Rochester, Minn.; one in St. Cloud, Minn.; four in the Columbus, Ohio, market; six in the Atlanta market, and two in the San Antonio, Texas, market. It also has contracts to recycle, or to replace and recycle, appliances for 122 other utilities across North America.
The Company generates revenue from retail sales of appliances at its ApplianceSmart stores; fees charged for collecting and recycling appliances for utilities and other sponsors of energy efficiency programs; fees charged for recycling and replacing old appliances with new ENERGY STAR appliances for energy efficiency programs sponsored by electric utilities; selling by-product materials, such as metals, from appliances that it recycle, including appliances collected through its ApplianceSmart stores, and sale of carbon offsets created by the destruction of ozone-depleting refrigerants acquired through various recycling programs. The Company’s some of its contracts include Southern California Edison to handle refrigerator and freezer recycling operations in 75% of its service territory; San Diego Gas & Electric to provide refrigerator, freezer and room air conditioner recycling services for their residential and small commercial customers; Southern California Public Power Authority (SCPPA), which sponsors a program to replace and recycle old, inefficient refrigerators for a certain segment of their customers, and Ontario Power Authority (OPA) in Ontario, Canada, to recycle refrigerators, freezers and room air conditioners throughout the province.
