Bayer AG, incorporated on January 15, 1952, is a strategic management holding company. The Company's business operations are organized into three subgroups: Bayer HealthCare, Bayer CropScience and Bayer MaterialScience, supported by the service companies Bayer Business Services, Bayer Technology Services and Currenta. Bayer HealthCare researches, develops, manufactures and markets products to improve the health of people and animals. Bayer CropScience is engaged in the crop protection and non-agricultural pest control. Bayer MaterialScience supplies polymers, and develops solution for a range of applications. The Company's subsidiaries include Adverio Pharma GmbH, AgrEvo Verwaltungsgesellschaft mbH, Alcafleu Management GmbH & Co. KG, Bayer Beteiligungsverwaltung Goslar GmbH, Bayer MaterialScience Customer Services GmbH, Schering-Kahlbaum Gesellschaft mit beschrankter Haftung and KOSINUS Grundstucks-Verwaltungsgesellschaft mbH & Co. Bayer HealthCare is divided into segments: Pharmaceuticals and Consumer Health. The Pharmaceuticals segment focuses on prescription products, especially for women's healthcare and cardiology, and also on specialty therapeutics in the areas of oncology, hematology and ophthalmology. Consumer Health segment includes the Consumer Care, Medical Care and Animal Health divisions. The main focus of the Consumer Care division is on non-prescription medicines, dietary supplements and dermatology products. The Medical Care division consists of the Diabetes Care business unit, which markets blood glucose monitoring systems, and the Radiology business unit, which offers contrast-enhanced diagnostic imaging equipment along with the necessary contrast agents. The products of the Animal Health division are destined for use in livestock and companion animals.
Bayer CropScience has businesses in seeds, crop protection and non-agricultural pest control. It is organized into two operating segments: Crop Protection/Seeds and Environmental Science. Crop Protection/Seeds markets a portfolio of seeds and traits along with chemical and biological pest management solutions, at the same time providing customer service to the agriculture industry. Environmental Science focuses on non-agricultural applications, with a portfolio of pest control products and services for areas ranging from the home and garden sector to forestry.
MaterialScience develops, manufactures and markets polymer materials, including polyurethane raw materials, polycarbonates, coating and adhesive raw materials, along with specialty chemicals. This subgroup also manufactures and markets selected inorganic basic chemicals. MaterialScience is organized into the Polyurethanes (PUR), Polycarbonates (PCS), and Coatings, Adhesives, Specialties business units (CAS), and the Industrial Operations area (IO).
The Company's PUR business unit supplies integrated raw material and systems, mainly for rigid and flexible foams. Flexible foam is used in products, such as mattresses and upholstery. Rigid foam serves as an insulating material for buildings and refrigerated appliances. PCS business unit operates large-scale facilities for high-tech plastic, which boasts favorable properties, such as low weight, stability, durability and relatively high design freedom. CAS unit develops and manufactures polyurethane-based raw materials, mainly for coatings and adhesives. The main areas of application include transportation and traffic, infrastructure and construction, and wood and furniture. The Company offers a range of waterborne polyurethane dispersions. In addition to its core business, the Company is working in cosmetics, medicine and textiles areas. IO supports the business units. It supplies raw materials and services, develops production technologies to enable the efficient use of resources, and for the safety and reliability of operations. It also manufactures and markets basic chemicals, such as chlorine, sodium hydroxide solution and hydrochloric acid.
