Blucora, Inc. (Blucora), incorporated on April 9, 1996, is engaged in providing Internet services. The Company operates through three business segments: Search and Content, Tax Preparation and E-Commerce. The Company’s Search and Content segment includes InfoSpace and HowStuffWorks, a provider of search services to distribution partners’ Web properties as well as to its owned and operated Web properties. The Company operates Tax Preparation segment through its subsidiary, TaxACT, Inc. (TaxACT), and provides online tax preparation service for individuals, tax preparation software for individuals and professional tax preparers, and ancillary services. E-Commerce segment operates through Monoprice, Inc. (Monoprice), a subsidiary of the Company, and provides self-branded electronics and accessories to both consumers and businesses.
Search and Content segment
The Search and Content segment provides search services to users of the Company’s owned and operated, and distribution partners' Web properties, as well as online content. The Company owns and operates properties that include Dogpile.com, WebCrawler.com, Zoo.com and HowStuffWorks.com. InfoSpace has a network of over 100 distribution partners and provides services to users through the respective Web properties of those distribution partners.
Tax Preparation segment
The Tax Preparation segment offers an online service atwww.taxact.com. The segment’s basic federal tax preparation online software service is free for everyone, which means that any taxpayer can use the services to e-file his or her federal income tax return without paying for upgraded services and may do so for every form that the IRS allows to be e-filed. The segment also offers ancillary services, which include, tax preparation support services, data archive services, bank services (including reloadable pre-paid debit card services), and additional e-filing services.
The Company’s E-Commerce segment sells its self-branded electronics and accessories through the www.monoprice.com Website. The Company also sells products through distributor, reseller and marketplace agreements. The segment offers around 14 product categories and over 6,700 individual products 24 hours a day from the convenience of a computer or a mobile device.
The Company competes with Google, Yahoo!, Microsoft, Intuit, H&R Block, Liberty and Jackson Hewitt.
