BlackRock, Inc. (BlackRock), incorporated on February 13, 2006, is an investment management company. BlackRock provides a range of investment and risk management services to institutional and retail clients worldwide. Its diverse platform of active (alpha) and index (beta) investment strategies across asset classes enables the Company to tailor investment outcomes and asset allocation solutions for clients. Its product offerings include single- and multi-asset portfolios investing in equities, fixed income, alternatives and money market instruments. The Company's products are offered directly and through intermediaries in a range of vehicles, including open-end and closed-end mutual funds, iShares exchange-traded funds (ETFs), separate accounts, collective investment funds and other pooled investment vehicles. BlackRock offers its Aladdin investment system, as well as risk management, outsourcing, advisory and technology services, to institutional investors and wealth management intermediaries under the BlackRock Solutions (BRS) name. BRS' Financial Markets Advisory (FMA) group advises global financial institutions, regulators, and government entities across a range of risk, regulatory, capital markets and strategic services. It also offers Aladdin Portfolio Builder, which provides financial advisors with portfolio construction tools, and Aladdin Risk for Wealth Management, which provides intermediary partners with institutional-quality portfolio construction, modeling and risk analytics capabilities.
The Company has $5.1 trillion of assets under management (AUM) at December 31, 2016. The Company's assets under management (AUM) are categorized under product types, such as Equity, Fixed income, Multi-asset, Cash Management and Alternatives. The Company's assets also include assets for which it provides risk management or other forms of nondiscretionary advice, or assets that it manages on a short-term, temporary basis. BlackRock serves retail investors globally through a range of vehicles across the active and passive spectrum, including separate accounts, open-end and closed-end funds, unit trusts and private investment funds. Its iShares products include U.S. iShares and International iShares. BlackRock's institutional AUM is diversified by both product and region, and it serves institutional investors on six continents in sub-categories, such as pensions, endowments and foundations, official institutions, and financial institutions. Its institutional strategies include Institutional active and Institutional index. The Company's multi-asset strategies include Asset allocation and balanced products, which combine equity, fixed income and alternative components for investors seeking a solution relative to a specific benchmark and within a risk budget; Target date and target risk products, which include investments in its LifePath and LifePath Retirement Income offerings; Fiduciary management services, which are mandates in which BlackRock assumes responsibility for some or all aspects of plan management, and FutureAdvisor, which is a digital wealth management platform.
BlackRock alternatives products are offered under two categories: core alternatives, and currency and commodities. Core includes alternative solutions, direct hedge funds, hedge fund and private equity solutions (funds of funds), opportunistic private equity and credit, real estate and infrastructure offerings. The Company's currency and commodities products include a range of active and passive products. Its cash management products include taxable and tax-exempt money market funds and customized separate accounts. The Company operates in the Americas; Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), and Asia-Pacific regions. In Americas, it operates in regions, such as the United States, as well as Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Spain. Its offerings in EMEA include fund families in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Dublin, and iShares listed on stock exchanges throughout Europe, as well as separate accounts and pooled investment products. In Asia-Pacific, it operates in Japan, Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Korea, China and India.
