Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc., incorporated in 1944, is engaged in marketing, producing and distributing non-alcoholic beverages. The Company serves a market of approximately 419 million consumers throughout the United States, Canada, the United States Virgin Islands, and certain other Caribbean islands, Belgium, continental France, Great Britain, Luxembourg, Monaco and Netherlands. It represents 16% of the total Coca-Cola product volume globally. During the year ended December 31, 2008, the Company sold approximately 42 billion bottles and cans (or 2 billion physical cases) throughout its territories. Products licensed to the Company through The Coca-Cola Company (TCCC) and its affiliates and joint ventures represented approximately 93% of its volume in 2008. In March 2008, the Company acquired the Cen-Tex Coca-Cola Bottling Company, a franchised Coca-Cola bottling company in Mexia, Texas.
The Company manufactures its finished products from syrups and concentrates it buys from TCCC and other licensors. In North America, the Company delivers most of its products directly to retailers for sale to the ultimate consumers. In Europe, its products are principally distributed to its customers’ central warehouses and through wholesalers who deliver to retailers.
The bottling territories of the Company in North America are located in 46 states of the United States, the District of Columbia, the United States Virgin Islands and certain other Caribbean islands, and all 10 provinces of Canada. The bottling territories in Europe consist of Belgium, continental France, Great Britain, Luxembourg, Monaco and the Netherlands. In 2008, the operations in North America and Europe contributed 70% and 30%, respectively, of the net operating revenues. Great Britain contributed 41% of the European net operating revenues.
The brands of the Company in North America include Coca-Cola Classic, Diet Coke, Sprite, Dasani and POWERade. The brands of the Company in Europe consist of Coca-Cola, Diet Coke/Coca-Cola light, Fanta, Coca-Cola Zero and Capri-Sun. The products of the Company are available in a range of different package types and sizes (single-serve, multi-serve and multi-pack) including, but not limited to, aluminum and steel cans, glass, aluminum and PET (plastic) bottles, pouches, and bag-in-box for fountain use.
The Company competes with PepsiCo, Inc., Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Nestlé S.A., Groupe Danone S.A., Kraft Foods Inc., The Pepsi Bottling Group, Inc. and PepsiAmericas, Inc.
