DaVita Inc., formerly DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc., incorporated on April 4, 1994, is a provider of kidney care services. The Company operates Kidney Care division and HealthCare Partners (HCP) division. The Company's segments include U.S. dialysis and related lab services, HCP and Other-Ancillary services and strategic initiatives. The Company's Kidney Care division is a provider of dialysis services in the United States, treating patients with chronic kidney failure and end stage renal disease (ESRD). HCP division is a patient and physician-focused integrated health care delivery and management company.
Kidney Care Division
The Company's U.S. dialysis and related lab services segment is a provider of kidney dialysis services for patients suffering from ESRD. The Company provides dialysis and administrative services in the United States, through a network of approximately 2,250 outpatient dialysis centers in over 46 states and the District of Columbia, serving approximately 180,000 patients. The Company also provides acute inpatient dialysis services in approximately 900 hospitals and related laboratory services throughout the United States. The Company provides hospital inpatient hemodialysis services, excluding physician services, to patients in approximately 900 hospitals throughout the United States. It renders these services based on a contracted per-treatment fee that is individually negotiated with each hospital. The Company's outpatient dialysis centers offer certain support services for dialysis patients preferring either home-based hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis in their homes. Home-based hemodialysis support services consist of providing equipment and supplies, training, patient monitoring, on-call support services and follow-up assistance. It owns over two separately incorporated, licensed, clinical laboratories, which specialize in ESRD patient testing.
The Company's ancillary services and strategic initiatives segment consists primarily of pharmacy services, disease management services, vascular access services, clinical research, physician services, direct primary care and its international dialysis operations. Its subsidiary, DaVita Rx, LLC, is a pharmacy that specializes in providing oral medications and medication management services to patients with ESRD and other chronic diseases. VillageHealth provides advanced care management services to health plans and government agencies for employees/members diagnosed with ESRD and/or chronic kidney disease (CKD). RMS Lifeline, Inc., the subsidiary of the Company that operates under the name Lifeline Vascular Access (Lifeline), provides management and administrative services to physician-owned vascular access clinics that provide vascular services for dialysis and other patients. DaVita Clinical Research (DCR) is a provider-based specialty clinical research organization with a spectrum of services for clinical drug research and device development. Nephrology Practice Solutions (NPS) is an independent business that collaborates with physicians providing clinical and integrated care to patients. Paladina Health is a healthcare services organization that operates membership-based primary care clinics mainly through employer-based on-site and near-site clinics. The Company operates or provides administrative services to approximately 120 outpatient dialysis centers located in over 10 countries outside of the United States, serving approximately 10,000 patients.
HealthCare Partners Division
The Company's HCP division manages and operates medical groups and affiliated physician networks in Arizona, California, Nevada, Florida, New Mexico and Colorado. HCP provides coordinated, outcomes-based medical care. It has approximately 807,400 members under its care in southern California, Colorado, central and south Florida, southern Nevada, central New Mexico and central Arizona through capitation contracts. HCP delivers services to its members through a network of over 550 associated group full-time primary care physicians, over 2,900 associated group and other network primary care physicians, 240 network hospitals, and several thousand associated group and network specialists.
The Company competes with Permanente Medical Group, Heritage Provider Network and Fresenius Medical Care.
