Dynegy Inc., incorporated on September 13, 2006, is a holding company, which conducts its business operations through its subsidiaries. The Company's principal business is the production and sale of electric energy, capacity and ancillary services. As of December 31, 2016, the Company had a fleet of 50 power plants in 12 states totaling approximately 31,000 megawatts (MW) of generating capacity. The Company's segments include PJM, NY/NE, ERCOT, ISO, IPH and CAISO. As of December 31, 2016, the Company's PJM segment comprised 23 power generation facilities located in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Virginia, West Virginia and New Jersey, totaling 13,510 MW of electric generating capacity. As of December 31, 2016, the Company's NY/NE segment comprised 11 power generation facilities located in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine and New York, totaling 6,543 MW of electric generating capacity.

As of December 31, 2016, the Company's ERCOT segment comprised six power generation facilities located in Texas, totaling 4,696 MW of electric generating capacity. As of December 31, 2016, the Company's MISO segment comprised three power generation facilities located in Illinois, totaling 1,913 MW of electric generating capacity. As of December 31, 2016, the Company's IPH segment comprised five coal-fired power generation facilities located in Illinois with a total generating capacity of 3,563 MW, and primarily operates in MISO. As of December 31, 2016, the Company's CAISO segment comprised two power generation facilities located in California, totaling 1,185 MW of electric generating capacity.

The Company sells electric energy, capacity and ancillary services on a wholesale basis from its power generation facilities. It also serves residential, municipal, commercial and industrial customers in MISO and PJM through its Homefield Energy and Dynegy Energy Services retail businesses. The Company operates its business with a range of customers, including regional transmission organization (RTOs) and independent system operator (ISOs), integrated utilities, municipalities, electric cooperatives, transmission and distribution utilities, power marketers, financial participants, such as banks and hedge funds and residential, and commercial and industrial end users.

The Company's PJM Interconnection, LLC (PJM) market includes all or parts of Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. PJM administers markets for wholesale electricity and provides transmission planning for the region, utilizing an LMP methodology which calculates a price for every generator and load point within PJM. As of December 31, 2016, the Company's Independent System Operator New England (ISO-NE) market included the six New England states of Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Maine. ISO-NE also dispatches power plants to meet system energy and reliability needs and settles physical power deliveries at Locational Marginal Pricings (LMPs). As of December 31, 2016, the Company's ERCOT fleet is comprised 3,976 MW of natural gas powered combined-cycle generation, 635 MW of Powder River Basin coal powered generation, and 85 MW of natural gas powered peaking generation. As of December 31, 2016, ERCOT served about 90% of load in the state of Texas over a high-voltage transmission system of more than 46,500 circuit miles.
