Profile: Dynegy Inc (DYN.N)
5 May 2015
Dynegy Inc. (Dynegy), incorporated on September 13, 2006, is a holding company and conducts its business operations through its subsidiaries. Dynegy’s primary business is the production and sale of electric energy, capacity and ancillary services from the fleet of 16 operating power plants in six states totaling approximately 13,200 MW of generating capacity. The Company operates a portfolio of generation assets that is diversified in terms of dispatch profile, fuel type and geography. The Company’s Coal and Illinois Power Holdings, LLC (IPH) segments are fleets of base load coal facilities, located in Illinois that dispatch around the clock throughout the year. The Company’s Gas segment operates both intermediate and peaking natural gas plants, located in the Midwest, Northeast and California. The inherent cycling and dispatch characteristics of its intermediate combined cycle units allow the Company to take advantage of the volatility in market pricing in the day-ahead and hourly markets. Peaking facilities are generally dispatched to serve load only during the highest periods of power demand, such as hot summer and cold winter days. In addition to generating power, the Company’s generating facilities also receive capacity revenues through structured markets or bilateral tolling agreements, as local utilities and ISOs seek to ensure sufficient generation capacity is available to meet future market demands.
Coal and IPH Segments
The Company’s Coal segment consists of four operating coal-fired power generation facilities in Illinois with a total generating capacity of 2,980 MW. Its IPH segment comprises five operating coal-fired power generation facilities located in Illinois with a total owned generating capacity of 4,062 MW.
The Company’s Gas segment consists of six operating natural gas-fired power generation facilities located in California, Nevada, Illinois, Pennsylvania, New York and Maine. It also has one fuel-oil fired power generation facility located in California, totaling 6,121 MW of electric generating capacity.
