El Paso Electric Company, incorporated on August 30, 1901, is a public utility company. As of December 31, 2016, the Company was engaged in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity in an area of approximately 10,000 square miles in west Texas and southern New Mexico. As of December 31, 2016, the Company owned or had ownership interests in several electrical generating facilities providing it with a generating capability of approximately 2,080 megawatts (MW). The Company's energy sources consists of nuclear fuel, natural gas, coal, purchased power and generated by Company-owned solar photovoltaic panels. As of December 31, 2016, the Company had power purchase agreements for 107 MW from solar photovoltaic generation facilities. As of December 31, 2016, the Company served approximately 411,100 residential, commercial, industrial, public authority and wholesale customers. The Company distributes electricity to retail customers principally in El Paso, Texas and Las Cruces, New Mexico. In addition, the Company's wholesale sales include sales for resale to other electric utilities and power marketers.
As of December 31, 2016, the Company's principal industrial, public authority and other retail customers included the United States military installations, including Fort Bliss in Texas and White Sands Missile Range, and Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, an oil refinery, several medical centers, two universities and a steel production facility. The Company's facilities consists of the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station (Palo Verde), Newman Power Station, Rio Grande Power Station, Montana Power Station (MPS) (Units 1 and 2), Copper Power Station and Renewables. As of December 31, 2016, Its renewables included Hueco Mountain wind ranch with a total capacity of approximately 1.32 MW and six solar photovoltaic facilities with a total capacity of 0.2 MW. As of December 31, 2016, the Company owned an interest in the other three nuclear generating units and common facilities at Palo Verde. The Arizona Public Service Company (APS) serves as operating agent for Palo Verde. As of December 31, 2016, the Newman Power Station consisted of three conventional steam-electric generating units and two combined cycle generating units. The Newman Power station operates primarily on natural gas but the conventional steam-electric generating units can also operate on fuel oil. As of December 31, 2016, the Company's Rio Grande Power Station consisted of three conventional steam-electric generating units and one aeroderivative unit, which operate on natural gas. The Company's Copper Power Station consists of a natural gas combustion turbine used primarily to meet peak demand. As of December 31, 2016, the Company's MPS consisted of two aeroderivative generating units, which operated on natural gas.
As of December 31, 2016, the Company owned or had interests in four 345 kilovolts (kV) transmission lines in New Mexico and Arizona and three 500 kV lines in Arizona. These lines enable the Company to deliver its energy entitlements from its remote generation sources at Palo Verde. The Company also owns the transmission and distribution network within its New Mexico and Texas retail service area and operates these facilities under franchise agreements with various municipalities. In addition to the transmission and distribution lines within its service territory, the Company's transmission network and associated substations include Springerville-Macho Springs-Luna-Diablo Line, West Mesa-Arroyo Line, Greenlee-Hidalgo-Luna-Newman Line, Eddy County-AMRAD Line and Palo Verde Transmission.
