Great Plains Energy Incorporated (Great Plains Energy), incorporated on February 26, 2001, is a public utility holding company. The Company operates through electric utility segment. The Company does not own or operate any assets other than the stock of its subsidiaries. The Company's subsidiaries with operations include Kansas City Power & Light Company (KCP&L) and KCP&L Greater Missouri Operations Company (GMO). KCP&L is an integrated, regulated electric utility that provides electricity to customers primarily in the states of Missouri and Kansas. KCP&L has an active subsidiary, Kansas City Power & Light Receivables Company (KCP&L Receivables Company). GMO is an integrated, regulated electric utility that provides electricity to customers in the state of Missouri. GMO also provides regulated steam service to certain customers in the St. Joseph, Missouri area. GMO has two active subsidiaries, GMO Receivables Company and MPS Merchant Services, Inc. (MPS Merchant).
The Company also owns GPE Transmission Holding Company, LLC (GPETHC). GPETHC holds interests in Transource Energy, LLC (Transource). GPETHC accounts for its investment in Transource under the equity method. Transource is focused on the development of competitive electric transmission projects. The electric utility segment of the Company consists of KCP&L; GMO's regulated utility operations, which include its Missouri Public Service and St. Joseph Light & Power divisions, and GMO Receivables Company. The electric utility segment serves approximately 846,100 customers located in western Missouri and eastern Kansas. Its customers include approximately 737,400 residences, over 98,400 commercial firms and approximately 600 industrials, municipalities and other electric utilities. KCP&L serves approximately 520,700 customers located in western Missouri and eastern Kansas. Its customers include approximately 465,200 residences, over 59,700 commercial firms and approximately 2,100 industrials, municipalities and other electric utilities. The electric utility segment has approximately 6,400 megawatts of owned generating capacity.
