Hill-Rom Holdings, Inc. (Hill-Rom), incorporated on August 7, 1969, is a manufacturer and provider of medical technologies and related services for the health care industry, including patient support systems, safe mobility and handling solutions, non-invasive therapeutic products for a variety of acute and chronic medical conditions, medical equipment rentals and information technology solutions. The Company’s product and service offerings are used by health care providers across the health care continuum in hospitals, extended care facilities and home care settings worldwide. It operates in three segments: North America, Surgical and Respiratory Care and International. Its product categories include Patient Support Systems, Non-Invasive Therapeutic Products, Medical Equipment Management and Contract Services, Patient Environment and Mobilization Solutions, Health Information Technology Solutions and Surgical Products. In February 2012, the Company acquired Germany-based Volker group. In July 2012, it acquired privately held Aspen Surgical Products.
North America segment sells and rents its patient support and near-patient technologies and services, as well as its health information technology solutions, in the United States and Canada. Surgical and Respiratory Care segment sells and rents its surgical and respiratory care products in all settings. International segments sell and rents similar products as its North America segment in regions outside of the United States and Canada.
Patient Support Systems
The patient support systems include a variety of bed systems, along with integrated and non-integrated therapeutic bed surfaces that the Company rents and sells worldwide. These patient support systems can be designed for use in high, mid and low acuity settings, depending on the specific design options. The advanced patient support systems can also provide patient data reporting (such as weight and therapy statistics), real time caregiver decision support, patient safety alarms and caregiver alerts concerning such things as bed exit, bed height, patient positioning, wound healing and prevention, pulmonary treatment, point of care controls, and patient turn assist and upright positioning. Approximately 53 % of its revenues, during the fiscal year ended September 30, 2012 (fiscal 2012), were derived from patient support systems.
Non-Invasive Therapeutic Products
The Company rents and sells non-invasive therapeutic products and surfaces designed for the prevention and treatment of a variety of acute and chronic medical conditions, including pulmonary, wound and bariatric conditions. The Company’s products are rented and sold by its North America and International segments, primarily in the United States., Canada and Europe, with the exception of its respiratory care products. Its respiratory care products are sold by its Surgical and Respiratory Care and International segments. Approximately 25% of the revenues were derived from these therapeutic products in fiscal 2012.
Medical Equipment Management and Contract Services
The Company provides rentals and health care provider asset management services for a variety of moveable medical equipment (MME), such as ventilators, defibrillators, intravenous pumps and patient monitoring equipment. In addition, it also sells equipment service contracts for its capital equipment in the United States. Approximately 25% of the revenues were derived from these products and services in fiscal 2012.
Patient Environment and Mobilization Solutions
The products under Patient Environment and Mobilization Solutions segment include mobility solutions (such as lifts and other devices used to move patients), architectural products (such as headwalls and power columns) and health care furniture. The Company sells patient environment and mobility solutions products across all of its segments, primarily to acute and extended care health care facilities worldwide.
Health Information Technology Solutions
The Company develops and markets a variety of communications technologies and software solutions. These are designed to improve patient safety and efficiency at the point of care by, among other things, enabling patient-to-staff and staff-to-staff communications, and aggregating and delivering patient data. These products are sold mainly to North America customers.
The Company offers a range of positioning devices for use in shoulder, hip, spinal and lithotomy surgeries, as well as platform-neutral positioning accessories. These products are sold mainly to its Surgical and Respiratory Care segment.
