Hanwha SolarOne Co., Ltd. (Hanwha SolarOne), incorporated on May 12, 2006, is an integrated manufacturer of silicon ingots, silicon wafers, PV cells and PV modules in China. The Company manufactures a range of silicon ingots, silicon wafers, Photovoltaic (PV) cells and PV modules using advanced manufacturing process technologies that have helped the Company to increase its operational efficiency. The Company also provides PV module processing services. The Company sells PV cells and PV modules both directly to system integrators and through third party distributors. The Company products primarily include silicon ingots, silicon wafers, PV cells and PV modules. The Company also provides PV module processing services. As of April 1, 2013, the Company had 1.5 Giga-Watt of annual PV module production capacity.
A PV cell is a semiconductor device that converts sunlight into electricity by a process known as the photovoltaic effect. As of April 1, 2013, two types of PV cells the Company produce include Monocrystalline silicon cell and Multicrystalline silicon cell. A PV module is an assembly of PV cells that have been electrically interconnected and laminated in a durable and weather-proof package. The Company has been selling a range of PV modules, ranging from 180 watt to 300 watt in power output specification, made primarily from the PV cells it manufacture. The majority of the PV modules the Company offers to its customers range in power between 240 watt and 295 watt. The Company sells approximately 90.0% of its PV modules under the Company’s SolarOne brand names, and approximately 10.0%, respectively, of its PV modules under the brand names of its customers.
The ingots manufactured by SolarOne Technology are generally used for our manufacture of wafers. The wafers manufactured by SolarOne Qidong are generally used for our manufacture of PV cells and PV modules. The Company provides PV module processing services to convert PV cells into PV modules on behalf of a related party. For these PV module processing services, the Company purchase PV cells from a customer and at the same time agree to sell a specified quantity of PV modules back to the same customer. The Company manufactures its wafers, PV cells and PV modules through SolarOne Qidong, its wholly owned People's Republic of China (PRC) subsidiary, with facilities occupying a gross floor area of 178,000 square meters in Qidong, Jiangsu Province, China.
The Company competes with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Sharp Corporation, Sunpower Corporation, Trina Solar Ltd., Yingli Green Energy Holdings Co., Ltd., Canadian Solar Inc., Jinko Solar Co., Ltd and Suntech Power Holding Co., Ltd.
