InterDigital, Inc. (InterDigital), incorporated in October 28, 1982, designs and develops advanced technologies for wireless communications. It has designed and developed a range of technologies that are used in digital cellular and wireless products and networks, including second generation (2G), third generation (3G), fourth generation (4G) and IEEE 802-related products and networks. It is a contributor of intellectual property to the wireless communications industry. As of December 31, 2012, InterDigital's wholly owned subsidiaries held a portfolio of over 19,000 patents and patent applications related to the fundamental technologies that enable wireless communications. Products incorporating its patented inventions include: mobile devices, such as cellular phones, tablets, notebook computers and wireless personal digital assistants; wireless infrastructure equipment, such as base stations, and components, dongles and modules for wireless devices.
InterDigital derives revenues primarily from patent licensing and sales, technology solutions licensing and sales and engineering services. As of December 31, 2012, its patent portfolio consisted of approximately 1,500 United States patents (approximately 190 of which were issued, during the year ended December 31, 2012) and approximately 8,800 non- United States patents (approximately 1,200 of which were issued, during 2012).
The Company is engaged in developing cellular technologies, including those related to code division multiple access (CDMA) and time division multiple access (TDMA) and, more recently, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing/ orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDM/OFDMA) and multiple input, multiple output (MIMO). A number of its TDMA-based and CDMA-based inventions are being used in all 2G, 2.5G and 3G wireless networks and mobile terminal devices. The Company has also developed and patented CDMA technology solutions. It holds a worldwide portfolio of CDMA patents and patent applications. It has engineering development projects to build its technology portfolio in many areas, including the long term evolution (LTE) and LTE-Advanced projects for 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) radio technology.
Some of InterDigital’s LTE include or relate to: MIMO technologies, OFDM/OFDMA/ Single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA), power control, hybrid automatic repeat request (hybrid-ARQ), control channel structures, advanced resource scheduling/allocation, security, Home Node-B (femto cells), relay communications, LTE receiver implementations, carrier aggregation for LTE-advanced; multi-carrier high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA), coordinated multi-point communications for LTE-advanced, and machine type communications (MTC).
Other Wireless Technologies
InterDigital’s wireless background includes engineering and corporate development activities that focus on solutions that apply to other wireless market segments. It is building a portfolio of technology related to wireless local area network (WLAN), wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi), wireless metropolitan area network (WMAN) and the digital cellular area that includes. The Company is developing technology for newer Wi-Fi and WLAN standards. It is also expanding its portfolio of technologies in areas, such as M2M or MTC, mobility, spectrum management and session continuity within ETSI and IETF.
