Janus Capital Group Inc., incorporated on January 23, 1998, provides investment management, administration, distribution and related services to financial advisors, individuals and institutional clients through mutual funds, separate accounts, other pooled investment vehicles, exchange-traded products (ETPs) and subadvised relationships (collectively referred to as investment products) in both domestic and international markets. The Company operates through investment management business segment. The Company provides investment management solutions across a range of disciplines, including fundamental the United States and global equities (growth and value), mathematical equities, fixed income and alternatives, through its subsidiaries, Janus Capital Management LLC (Janus), INTECH Investment Management LLC (INTECH) and Perkins Investment Management LLC (Perkins). As of December 31, 2016, the Company's investment products were distributed through three primary channels: intermediary, institutional and self-directed. Each distribution channel focuses on specific investor groups and the requirements of each group.
Janus manages primarily growth equity portfolios. Janus focuses on fundamental and global macro fixed income and diversified alternatives and ETPs. INTECH manages institutional portfolios. Perkins manages investment products and focuses on building diversified portfolios. Kapstream Capital Pty Limited (Kapstream) manages global macro fixed income products. VS Holdings, Inc. (VelocityShares) provides investors with solutions for portfolio and trading risk management. VelocityShares is a sponsor of ETPs that are institutionally focused and offers volatility management solutions.
The intermediary channel distributes mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) through financial intermediaries, including banks, broker-dealers, financial advisors, variable insurance trusts and retirement platforms. International mutual funds are also part of the intermediary channel and are offered through Janus Capital Funds plc, a mutual fund trust. The institutional channel serves corporations, endowments, foundations, Taft-Hartley funds, public fund clients and sovereign entities, with distribution direct to the plan sponsor and through consultants. The self-directed channel serves existing individual investors investing in the Company's products through a mutual fund supermarket or directly with the Company. The exchange traded notes (ETNs) associated with VelocityShares are also part of the self-directed channel.
