KKR & CO. L.P. (KKR), incorporated on June 25, 2007, is a global investment firm that manages investments across multiple asset classes, including private equity, energy, infrastructure, real estate, credit and hedge funds. The Company's business offers a range of investment management services to its fund investors, and provides capital markets services to its firm, its portfolio companies and third parties. The Company conducts its business with offices across the world, providing it with a global platform for sourcing transactions, raising capital and carrying out capital markets activities. The Company operates through four segments: Private Markets, Public Markets, Capital Markets and Principal Activities.
Through the Company's Private Markets segment, KKR manages and sponsors a group of private equity funds and co-investment vehicles that invest capital for long-term appreciation, either through controlling ownership of a company or strategic minority positions. It also manages and sponsors a group of funds and co-investment vehicles that invest capital in real assets, such as infrastructure, energy and real estate. These funds, vehicles and accounts are managed by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. L.P. The Company has approximately 20 funds. The Company's private equity portfolio consists of over 110 companies, which operates in approximately 20 general industries.
The Company operates and reports its combined credit and hedge funds businesses through the Public Markets segment. Its credit business advises funds, collateralized loan obligations (CLOs), separately managed accounts, and investment companies, which invest capital in leveraged credit strategies, such as leveraged loans, high yield bonds and opportunistic credit, and alternative credit strategies, such as mezzanine investments, direct lending investments, special situations investments and long/short credit investment strategies. The funds, accounts, registered investment companies and CLOs in the Company's leveraged credit and alternative credit strategies are managed by KKR Credit Advisors (US) LLC.
The Public Markets segment also includes its hedge funds business that offers a variety of investment strategies, including customized hedge fund portfolios and hedge fund-of-fund solutions. The funds and accounts in its hedge fund business are managed by Prisma Capital Partners LP (KKR Prisma or Prisma). The Company's subsidiary, KKR Financial Holdings LLC (KFN) is a specialty finance company, which has range of asset classes in which it invests, consisting primarily of corporate loans (leveraged loans), high yield debt securities, interests in joint ventures and partnerships, and interests in oil and gas properties.
The Company's Capital Markets segment consists primarily of the Company's global capital markets business. The Company's capital markets business supports its firm, its private equity and other portfolio companies and third-party clients by developing and implementing both traditional and non-traditional capital solutions for investments or companies seeking financing. These services include arranging debt and equity financing for transactions, placing and underwriting securities offerings and providing other types of capital markets services. KKR Capital Markets LLC is a broker-dealer is also registered or authorized to carry out certain broker-dealer activities in various countries in North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. Its third party capital markets activities are generally carried out through Merchant Capital Solutions LLC, a joint venture with two other unaffiliated partners, and non-bank financial companies (NBFCs), in India.
Through its Principal Activities segment, the Company manages the firm's assets and deploys capital. The Company uses its Principal Activities assets to support its investment management and capital markets businesses. It also deploys Principal Activities assets in order to help establish a track record for fundraising purposes in new strategies. The Company's Principal Activities assets also provide the required capital to fund its Capital Markets business when underwriting or syndicating securities, or when providing term loan commitments for transactions involving its portfolio companies and for third parties. It also makes investments through the Company's Principal Activities segment, which include co-investments alongside its Private Markets and Public Markets funds, as well as make Principal Activities investments that do not involve its Private Markets or Public Markets funds.
