Luna Innovations Incorporated, incorporated in 1990, is engaged in developing, manufacturing and marketing fiber optic test and measurement, sensing, and instrumentation products. The Company operates in two segments: its Products and Licensing segment and its Technology Development segment. The Company's Products and Licensing segment develops, manufactures and markets the Company's fiber optic test and measurement, sensing, and instrumentation products and also conducts applied research in the fiber optic sensing area for both corporate and government customers. The Company's Technology Development segment performs applied research for government funded projects and includes the Company's secure computing and communications group (SCC). In March 2013, it announced the sale of its Secure Computing and Communications (SCC) group to MacAulay-Brown, Inc.
Test & Measurement, Sensing, and Instrumentation Products
The Company’s product lines in the test and measurement domain include the Company's Optical Vector Analyzer (OVA), its Optical Backscatter Reflectometerr (OBR), and the Phoenix family of tunable lasers. The Company's test and measurement products monitor the integrity of fiber optic network components and sub-assemblies. These products are designed for manufacturers and suppliers of optical components and sub-assemblies. The OBR gives end users a resolution view that is similar to an x-ray into the inner workings of a fiber optic network. The OBR also has a feature that allows users to turn optical fiber into multiple sensors that could be used in a range of temperature measurement and monitoring applications, including power generation; civil structure monitoring; industrial process control; component-level heating in optical amplifiers; strain and load distribution measurements of aircraft harnesses, and temperature monitoring inside telecommunications cabinets and enclosures.
ODiSI Sensing Solution; Distributed Sensing Systems
During the year ended December 31, 2011, the Company launched sensing platform, ODiSI. It provides distributed strain or temperature measurements and delivers amount of data by using an optical fiber as a continuous sensor over up to 50 meters of surface.
Tunable Lasers
The Company’s tunable lasers are used in a range of markets, such as industrial and medical sensing. The Company has the rights to manufacture a line of swept tunable lasers in its existing fiber optic test and measurement, as well as sensing markets.
Fiber Optic Shape Sensing Solutions for Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgical Systems
The Company develops its fiber optic sensing technology to enhance medical devices used for minimally invasive procedures for diagnostics, surgery or therapy. This technology can be applied to measure the position and shape of an instrument inside the body, as well as to measure pressure and temperature.
Ultrasound Medical Device
The Company has Emboli Detection and Classification (EDAC) QUANTIFIER ultrasound product. The EDAC QUANTIFIER is a non-invasive medical device that uses quantitative ultrasound technology to count emboli in ex-vivo blood circuits. Emboli can be air bubbles or solid matter, such as lipids or blood clots, and can enter the blood circuit during critical and invasive medical procedures, such as cardiopulmonary bypass surgery.
