The Company is an operator, franchisor and licensor of hotels and timeshare properties under various brand names. It also develops, operates and markets residential properties, and provides services to home or condominium owner associations. Marriott International operates in three business segments: North American Full-Service, North American Limited-Service and International. Its North American Full-Service segment includes brands, such as The Ritz-Carlton, EDITION, JW Marriott, Autograph Collection Hotels, Renaissance Hotels, Marriott Hotels, Delta Hotels and Resorts, and Gaylord Hotels located in the United States and Canada. Its North American Limited-Service segment includes brands, such as AC Hotels by Marriott, Courtyard, Residence Inn, SpringHill Suites, Fairfield Inn & Suites and TownePlace Suites properties located in the United States and Canada. Its International segment includes brands, such as The Ritz-Carlton, Bulgari Hotels & Resorts, EDITION, JW Marriott, Autograph Collection Hotels, Renaissance Hotels, Marriott Hotels, Marriott Executive Apartments, AC Hotels by Marriott, Courtyard, Residence Inn, Fairfield Inn & Suites, Protea Hotels and Moxy Hotels located outside the United States and Canada. Its loyalty programs include The Ritz-Carlton Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest.

As of June 30, 2016, the Company operates, franchises or licenses 4,554 properties around the world with 777,402 rooms. The Ritz-Carlton is a hospitality brand, which includes hotels, residences, golf communities, spas, retail outlets and restaurants. Renaissance Hotels brand serves upper-upscale tier and targets lifestyle-oriented business travelers. Renaissance Hotels brand includes icons, boutiques, resorts and hotels. Its Marriott Hotels brand serves business and leisure upper-upscale travelers, and meeting groups. The Marriott Hotels brand has properties that offer guest rooms, convention and banquet facilities, destination-driven restaurants and lounges, concierge lounges, fitness centers and swimming pools. The Marriott Hotels brand includes resort properties that have additional recreational facilities, such as tennis courts, golf courses, additional restaurants and lounges, and spa facilities.

The Company's Delta Hotels and Resorts brand serves business travelers within the upscale and upper-upscale tiers and has properties in gateway cities, suburban areas, near airports and resort locations. The Delta Hotels and Resorts brand has properties that feature meeting spaces, food and beverage options, and fitness centers. The Marriott Executive Apartments brand provides international, five-star serviced apartments in emerging market gateway cities, designed for business executives requiring housing outside their home country, usually for a month or longer. Marriott Executive Apartments include one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments designed with amenities and services, including on-site gyms and other recreational facilities, weekly housekeeping services and laundry facilities within the apartment. The Gaylord Hotels brand has properties that offer 400,000 to 600,000 square feet of meeting and convention space, dining and entertainment offerings, and retail outlets.

The AC Hotels brand by Marriott serves business travelers in the upper-moderate tier looking for a hotel with European touches. AC Hotels by Marriott properties are located in destination, downtown and lifestyle centers. Courtyard is its hotel product designed for the upscale tier, and is focused primarily on transient business travel. Courtyard hotels feature functionally designed guest rooms and meeting rooms, and offer services, such as a swimming pool, an exercise room and The Bistro (a self-serve food store open around the clock a day). Residence Inn is extended-stay hotel brand designed for frequent and extended stay business and leisure travelers staying over five or more nights. Residence Inn offers suites that feature separate living, sleeping and working areas, as well as kitchens with appliances. Residence Inn offers additional amenities including breakfast, evening social events over three times a week, grocery shopping services and on-site laundry facilities.

The Fairfield Inn & Suites brand serves moderate tier and provides services, such as breakfast and on property fitness facilities. The Fairfield Inn & Suites brand offers hotels that feature a multi-functional lobby, and guest rooms and suite rooms. The TownePlace Suites brand serves upper-moderate tier and designed to appeal to business and leisure travelers staying for over five nights or more. TownePlace Suites offers functional spaces for living and working, including a kitchen and a home office. Protea Hotels is a hospitality brand in Africa and offers primary and secondary business centers for business and leisure travelers.

The Company competes with Hilton, Intercontinental Hotels Group, Hyatt, Wyndham, Accor, Choice, Carlson Rezidor, Best Western and La Quinta.
