Profile: Milestone Scientific Inc (MLSS.PK)
Milestone Scientific Inc. (Milestone), incorporated on August 17, 1989, is engaged in computer-controlled injection technologies and solutions for the medical and dental markets. Milestone has developed a computer-controlled anesthetic delivery instrument, through the use of The Wand, a single use disposable handpiece. The instrument is marketed in dentistry under CompuDent, Wand Plus and STA (Single Tooth Anesthesia) and in medicine under CompuMed. CompuDent is for all dental procedures, which require local anesthetic. CompuMed and Wand Plus are suitable for medical procedures regularly performed in Plastic Surgery, Hair Restoration Surgery, Podiatry, Colorectal Surgery, Dermatology, Orthopedics and a range of other disciplines. The instruments are sold in the United States and in over 47 countries abroad. Milestone’s products are manufactured by a third-party contract manufacturer. In July 2011, the Company entered into a definitive joint venture agreement with Beijing 3H (Heart-Help-Health) Scientific Technology Co., Ltd. (Beijing 3H) for the development, commercialization, manufacture and marketing of epidural and intra-articular injection instruments. Milestone has a 50% interest in the joint venture.
STA Single Tooth Anesthesia Instrument (STA Instrument)
The STA Single Tooth Anesthesia Instrument (STA Instrument) is a computer-controlled local anesthesia delivery instrument, which incorporates the pressure feedback elements of Milestone’s CompuFlo technology, thereby allowing dentists to administer injections accurately into the periodontal ligament space, anesthetizing a single tooth. With this procedure dentists can anesthetize a single tooth root in one minute and a multiple root tooth in two minutes.
CompuDent (also known as the Wand Plus internationally) is Milestone’s Computer-Controlled Local Anesthetic Delivery (C-CLAD) instrument and predecessor of the STA Instrument. CompuDent delivers anesthesia at a precise and consistent rate below a patient’s pain threshold. CompuDent includes single-use handpieces (The Wand).
CompuMed is a computer-controlled injection instrument. CompuMed allows medical procedures, requiring intravenous sedation, to be performed with only local anesthesia. Also, dosages of local anesthetic can often be reduced.
The Wand handpiece is used in conjunction with the STA, CompuDent and CompuMed instruments. The Wand allows bi-directional rotation during injection, which prevents needle deflection that occurs with a traditional syringe.
The SafetyWand is the injection device. Milestone’s SafetyWand disposable handpiece is an injection device, which incorporates engineered sharp protection features to aid in the prevention of needlesticks.
